I don't know where to go so I have come here. I am 5'6", female, 227 lbs. and I do cardio 5 times a week for 30+ minutes. Today I picked up two dumbbells that are each 5lbs. I have no idea where to start or what to do, could someone please guide me in the right direction? I will be doing this at home.

If you have a smart phone there's a app called Jefit that's helped me alot. Just started lifting myself and it's great.

Places to start - check out Stronglifts or "New Rules of Lifting for Women".

There are quite a few female lifters on the boards.
  • Thanks guys, I just downloaded that app and check out the NRL4W forums out! I have few questions still though, how long should I be strength training for? I will be doing 35 minutes of cardio afterwards, also, can you recommend any foods to eat after a strength and cardio workout?
  • PROTEIN!

I've heard a lot that chocolate milk is the best post-workout "meal".

I drink Almond Milk (60 cal version) and always feel great!
  • I went from one yogurt cup to a yogurt cup and 2/3 cup of honey bunches of oats with almonds and 2% milk but I read somewhere on MFP that cereal is terrible for you?!

I've heard anything high in protien. I got some whey protien powder from Walmart that u can make shakes or smoothies with. As far as the cereal I eat it every morning since I've started trying to lose weight and I'm not dead yet 8-)
