I'm going to say it's low impact and therefore not bad?

Bad knees, stay away from the stairmaster. Think about it. You are constantly putting a bend to your knees on stairs...
What i find AWESOME for knees is the Arc Trainer. If your gym has one, get on it!!! Don't put it on incline, leave it at the lowest setting , vary the resistance if you must.

You are going to bend your knees doing pretty much any cardio exercise. The impact relates to the amount of weight that is being applied.

Mine too. I have patellaer tracking disorder in both knees and stairs are HUGE no no for knee problems.

I have bad knees and my Dr. said actual stairs are bad because of the impact (and the fact that I am overweight so that makes the impact worse).

He said stair type activities where there is no impact of the foot on a lower stair is fine and will actually help strengthen the muscles that I don't use as much as I should because I avoid stairs.

I have pretty bad jumpers knee from years of playing basketball and I do the stair master five days a week and have had no problems. You probably do more damage to your knees while running than you would on a stair master.

Thanks all. I appreciate the responses. I do not have bad knees but after my first 5k I am detecting some soreness due to wearing the wrong kind of shoe and I am looking for a good cardio workout without putting more pressure but that makes sense. Thanks
