Pull ups

I try and try to do great pull ups but for the life of me I cannot. I see lots of people in the gym crank out lots of pull ups and make it look so easy. Most of the guys doing pull ups like champs seem to be thin. I weigh in at 205 lbs right now. I can do assisted pull ups and get like 10 but unassisted I can only get 3 if i am lucky. Is there a trick to doing good pull ups or is there any particular exercises that will help me to crank out pull ups like a champ?

hahaha because I am a mom of a toddler, when I saw "pull-ups" I immediately thought of something else.

anyway, here's some good advice: http://nerdfitness.com/blog/2011/04/25/do-a-pull-up/

scroll down for a link on using your table if you don't have a bar at home.

    good luck.

I LOVE Nerd Fitness! My goal this year is to do a pull up. So far I am still in level one...

they just become easier with time...

one thing that did actually help me was doing long negatives .. pretty much jump up or using a chair or w.e .. to lock out.. and really slow down.
  • Thank you so far. I will continue to work on this and see how much I can improve. I usually wait until I am into my workout a bit before trying pull ups so I think I will jump right to pull ups first after warmup.

get a pull up bar and set it up in a room that you always walk inside of in your house. Each time you walk in, get on that bar and crank out a few... Pretty soon you'll be knocking out pull ups like a champ..

Start with a close grip and keep your elbows close to the body. As you get better you can start widening your grip. It does help. I weigh 190lbs and can crank out 8-10 wide grip with no issues (except for the tendinitis in both elbows) but I got good at them doing close grip pullups first. In fact this is how I start off all my female clients so they can build up confidence to learn how to do a few on their own.

I started off using assisted Pullups, and sloely worked my way up to free pullups. I used to be one of those guys wishing I could do them, and now I can.. It takes time, but you will get there :)
