Ok so im new to this system and there is one thing i dont understand. I understand that you are counting calories but then they give you the daily thing with the tot fat and fiber and suger etc etc. so what im asking is if i want to lose weight do i just look at the calories or the calories and all the other stuff on the other page?

Losing weight is all about calories in vs. calories burned. However, losing weight AND being healthy involves monitoring your fat, carbs, water, sodium, etc. I highly recommend at least being cognisant of the other things being tracked on MFP.
  • It's a little overwhelming isn't it?

For the first 3 months I just monitored my calories and lost weight.

Once I was used to the system I started paying attention to the other stuff :)

    I think that's a question that'll get you 100 different opinions.

I don't bother with nutrient values particularly strictly, but largely because I'm too lazy too. Others will focus very closely on them.

There is also a debate about the values MFP gives which is based on 75%/10%/15% I think, most seem to suggest that 40/30/30 is better. Personally my diet is too carb heavy and protein light for that to work without a major reorganisation of my diet.

If you're just starting, I'd say get familiar with controlling the calories, note how your diet is affecting the macro values and as you get comfortable with you & read the various forums and blog posts, you'll get a better awareness of how those values may/may not be working for you.

    ^^^ This

It's a personal preference, though. I would recommend doing what is easiest and most comfortable to you at this point. You can always add in additional 'tweaks' and items to track once you're more used to logging & eating healthier. Best of luck!
