Question for dog people!

I have a 10 month old goldendoodle, Riley (love of my life!) Lately, I have been a little concerned because she has been eating very little. It started a few months ago when she was on Natures Recipe, so I switched her over to Wellness. The first time she had it she gobbled it down, but now I am lucky if she eats 1.5 cups a day. (Before this started she was eating 3 cups a day). I really thought it was just boredom of eating the same food every day but im not sure...

She will definitley eat any treats given to her...

Do you think I should be concerned with her eating this little? Do some dogs just not eat that much? I dont want to take her to the vet and get a bunch of tests taken unless I know its something I should be concerned about!

Thanks in advance!
Amanda & Riley

Dogs are like people. They aren't always hungry. Some dogs don't eat as much as others. I had a Samoyed for years who would eat half his food, then go back later sometimes, but sometimes wouldn't. He just regulated himself. I wouldn't worry, unless she's lethargic, seems like she's in pain, or has other obvious signs that something is wrong. If she's happy, healthy, and energetic, she probably just doesn't want to eat that much. :)

    How active is your dog?

Does she have "regular" bowel movements or does she have diarrhea?

My Frenchie x Boston Moto has a sensitive tummy and though he would gobble food when he got new stuff, after awhile, it would give him belly aches and he actually stopped eating till we found a food that doesn't bother him at all.

As well, some days he doesn't eat his food totally, and other days he does instantly when he gets it...

My dog is like this too. She's a Westiepoo, only 12 pounds. The guidelines say to feed her 1/2 to 1 cup a day. It's rare she'll eat a whole cup. Sometimes, only half (although she gets the whole cup). I think it depends on her activity levels that day; days when I'm at work she's sleeping most of the day so hasn't used up much energy. She's always up for treats, though! So, now that I know she'll eat, I don't worry about it too much. I've also tried different brands of food (gradually blending it in), and I've found one she doesn't seem to mind. She's never gobbled her whole dinner (except on special occasions like Thanksgiving when she gets some turkey added in to her dogfood....THEN she'll eat the whole thing!).

She is VERY active and her stools seem pretty normal...
She seems to always be happy, not in any pain or anything.

Just keep an eye on her, if everything else stays ok then leave her to it. You're just changed her food maybe this one gives her a Fuller feeling. My dog has never been a big eater, though she will always scoff treats if she gets the chance. Since she isn't a big eater we just make sure the food she does have is quality food so she gets all the nutrients she needs

Then I wouldn't worry about it! I actually think it's better to not have a "piggy dog"....leads me to think there won't be weight issues when they're older. If they just eat enough to not be hungry, and they're happy and normal body functions, I try not to worry (although believe me I do.....she's my baby!).

Have you had her checked out by the vets? Is she drinking enough water, or quite a lot? My dogs will sometimes go without food for a day or so - that's kind of a breed trait though, they're Huskies. Mya once went 3 days with only half a cup. They're all happy and healthy though.

If you are concerned, stop giving her treats for a while. Dogs around that age can have a tendency to become fussy eaters, if she knows there is a possibility of a tasty treat...why bother with the normal food lol.

1 of my boys, Kai doesn't like eating too close after being walked either.

But yeah, so long as the vet says she's fine, she's drinking enough water, she's lively, alert and is still putting on weight (defo not getting skinnier) then I, personally, wouldn't worry too much :-))

Are you free feeding her? If so, that can create a picky eater. If you are free feeding, try putting her food down for 20 minutes and then pick it up until her next scheduled feeding. Then put it back down at the next feeding and leave it down for 20 minutes. Then pick it up. A healthy dog will not starve themselves.

At her age, she may have just finished a growth spurt and may be self regulating her food, too.

I also have a goldendoodle and a recently adopted labradoodle! They are great dogs. When our goldendoodle was a puppy and growing he lived for meal time and was ALWAYS hungry. Once he was out of that growing puppy stage his appetite did a 180 degree change. Now as an adult he almost always has food left in his bowl and will sometimes not eat more than a bite or two all day because hes just not hungry. He still loves a treat no matter what but food he only eats when hes hungry. Hes completely healthy and the vet has no concerns with it.

One of my dogs is like that.. some days he is hungry and eats all this food and other days he doesn't eat much at all. I just leave the food there and he will eat when he's hungry. He is about 2 years old, active and plays with my other dogs all the time... Oh yes and never passes up on a treat! :) I wouldn't worry about it unless you notice activity and physical changes then I would say take him to the vet.

My dog has been the same since a pup and she's over 2 years old now, and extremely fit and active (Border Collie x Siberian Husky). Avoid giving your pup too many treats and just try to find what times of the day she's hungry. My dog prefers her largest meal in the afternoon a little while after her walk, and a lighter meal in the evening. She doesn't really eat in the morning.
