Cutting Sugar Out

So I have a HUGE sweet tooth. Whenever I crave something it is something sweet. Candy, cake, ice cream. I love it ALL! Needless to say I think this is my biggest problem with me not losing weight. I really stay active, I run at least 3 times a week and do strength training in the gym the same amount. But I can't get the scale to budge and I really think it's because I am overindulging in sugars. Has anyone else had this problem, and actually cut sugar from their diet with no problem? I think this is something I really need to do to reach my goal but it's very daunting. I see myself going through withdrawals and then just binging on sweets for a week....haha

I started taking green tea extract and it helped me with my sugar cravings. I used to need to eat something sweet after lunch, but after I took green tea extract for a week or so, I didn't need the sweets after my meals. Eventually, I was able to control the cravings without green tea. I took the green tea extract/african mango supplement from Vitamin Shoppe. Pretty cost effective.0

Cutting sugar entirely from your diet would probably only make the cravings worse since you were either completely depriving yourself of those treats or replacing them with ones full of fake sugars.
Just don't overindulge. I know thats an over-simplification, but that's ultimately what it comes down to. Allow yourself to enjoy a small amount of something that fits in your plan for the day rather than trying to deny yourself. And every once in a while, have that full slice of your favorite cake, or an extra scoop of your favorite ice cream, just don't do it all the time.
Self control and re-teaching ourselves how to eat on a whole is the best way to be successful in the long term. Moderation, portion control and discipline are the main keys to changing your eating lifestyle for the better, not elimination of foods we love from our lives.
Personally, I try to make sure I have room for a sweet treat every single day. Whether it's dessert or something earlier in the day, I almost always have a little something. And then last night, at my friends wedding, I happily enjoyed a slice of their amazing cake and a few home made French macarons. It hasn't ruined everything I've accomplished to this point and it was a great treat to myself after not having had any larger indulgences for awhile.0 -
I found for myself - cutting carbs and sugars helped the scale go down...
It can be hard...and it takes willpower I won't deny that at all...
what I did was drop all processed food - which meant all processed sugars....and ate a lot of fruit....once I got that down then I weeded through the fruit I ate in a day and switched to primarily lower sugar fruits like berries - I also found I like to snack on red pepper strips and baby carrots as they both provide a sweetneed
When i feel the need for chocolate I reach for a good strong dark chocolate - gives a touch of sweet but being dark a little bit satisfies...
By doing so I manage to keep my sugars down quite low - there are days when I have a sugar splurge buy choosing a higher sugar fruit...or I endulge in a Larabar (like today )
It's not for everyone and there is controversy over sugar...my own personal belief is sugar is sugar no matter where it comes from (I am aware there are different types and not all react within your body the same way) - be it processed or from natural sources like fruit...to much from any type of source is too much for me and slows down my weight loss...hence why I cut down on my sugars....0 -

This is almost word for word of what I do myself. I was sugar obsessed!!!! Notice, I said WAS. More cavities than you can imagine and I had the weight to show it. No matter how much better I was trying to eat, I wasn't getting to my goals. Finally, I decided to try cutting sugar. In order to do it, I made a jar where anytime I ate a cookie or candy, I had to put $5 in, per PIECE. Guess what I figured out? I love money more than sugar hahaha. Then I began to cut processed foods and took in my sugar from natural sources instead. After about a month, my life long obsession finally ended. I can't believe it but I hardly even crave sweets! When I do, I just usually chew some mint gum and it goes away. I also am now UNDER my original goal weight so yes, it worked for me!!!
It's wasn't easy but after I forced myself to break the habit, I started seeing great results!

I didn't cut sugar out completely, but I have gradually phased a lot of added sugars out. I can honestly say, the less sugar I eat the less I crave it. I don't even want Dr Pepper any more, and that used to be my biggest weakness! All I can tell you is, just do it. When a craving hits, do something else. Drink some water, eat a few almonds, scrub the toilet - ANYTHING except give in to it.0

yes Yes YES I have the same problem!!!! When I cut out sugar I do it all at once. I'm a compulsive overeater and if I have any added sugar I'm off to the races eating 'M O R E." I can't eat flour either as I'm told flour turns to sugar which turns to ... F A T What's worse is that when i eat those things I have a problem with depression. If I don't ... i DON'T. I would love to try to support each other in this endeavor so please keep in touch! I'm fairly new to the site so I have to figure out how to friend request you.

Wish I had self control ... you are obviously not a compulsive overeater. For one of us to do that ... to be disciplined and eat a reasonable portion ... spells DISASTER I haven't had sugar or flour this time since 11/26/11. It's not hard at all ... obviously I don't eat processed foods. Any bread I eat is sprouted bread (without flour.) It has become a habit but at times I "do" miss sweets but fortunately, not often. I just can't afford to go there.0

I used to eat chocolate/sweets everyday before joining here. I felt like I had to have something sugary everyday!! I slowly cut it out altogether. I would have something sugary only every other day, then 2 a week, down to 1 per week, to now, only eating that stuff on special occasions. If I find myself in dire need, i choose something sweet and healthy, or prepacked 100 calorie packs. And hey, occationally a treat isn't a bad thing! Don't deprive yourself, or you end up overdoing it!
I like oranges, apples, yogurt, and my fav right now is Yo-Crunch Greek Parfaits....they taste like blueberry and strawberry cheesecake!!! Also, sugar free pudding and jello are great!0 -
I have the same problem but I found that if you can get thru the first 3 days of cravings they go away. You should also try fruit instead.0
