combine heavy lifting AND toning?

Does it hurt anything to have 3 heavy lifting days and say 2 toning days in the same week? I assume they might work the same muscles. For instance, if I do 5x5s or something similar on MWF, can I go ahead and do toning with bands on TTh? Would that hurt my muscles? Is the latter really necessary? I am trying to firm/tone up quite a bit and still lose fat.

Thanks!

What do you mean by "toning"?

the heavy lifting will take care of your weight lifting needs. no reason to do some nonsense high rep/low weight exercise.

Skip the "toning" and use those days to let your body recover.

I meant use bands and stuff (by "toning").

The issue I am having is hubby and I are supposed to be doing heavy weights together at home, but it's not working out right now due to odd schedules. I still want to do something. Maybe I'll just use the bands until we get into a regular routine.

I'm not sure what "toning" is... if you are already doing heavy lifting, I don't what the point is in using bands or lighter weights. Can you do the heavy lifting without your husband?

I need a spotter, so no. :frown: Actually, I might be able to modify some.

If you have been lifting for a while, you should know more or less what your limits are. It is very possible to train without a spotter if you keep tabs on your capabilities. Please throw the "toning" word out the window. It's nonsense.

If you make sure to have a rest day between lifting and any other weight bearing exercise of the same muscle groups, then I don't think it would be a problem. I like to take classes, but I do lift on my own too. I generally avoid a class that will have weight bearing exercises on muscle groups that are still recovering. What that ends up meaning for me is 2 lifting days and a 3rd day of a class that involves bands, lighter weights, boot camp style drills, etc. and my cardio (zumba, which is what I really love) on the other days. Some may say skip that stuff, but I enjoy it and feel it makes me athletically well-rounded.;-)

IF you work full body each session, don't do more than 3 day split (Mon, Wed, Fri) with cardio Tue, Thu.

If you split into different areas, it is ok to go 5 days but definately have a rest on Sat and Sun.
