I think it can only be measured by Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis... or BIA for short. Very simply...
A small and completely harmless electrical current is passed through your body. The electrical current passes more quickly through fat free tissue like muscle than it does through fat or bone tissue. So...
The amount of resistance to the electrical current relates to how much fat-free mass a person has and their body density.

Yeah, have heard of that too! DEXA scans, hydrostatic weighing, professional caliper measuring...blah blah. All out of my reach!0

Most methods that we use have a good deal of error involved. When you calculate body fat, just use the same method each time and use the results to show progression to ensure things are going the right way instead of using those results as the absolute accurate truth.0

No matter which method you choose to track your body fat, it will be off by 2-12%. 2% is more for the Bio-Electrical Impedance and 12% is more for the online calculators. So, whether you pick the BEI or go online and use a measurement formula, just pick one method that you can do every month and stick with that same method. If you want it, I have the formulas from ACE for measurements that are estimated to only have about a 4-6% error.0
