Women who lift heavy will lose their estrogen.....

Yes.....I really heard two guys telling a lady at the gym this last night. They also told her she shouldn't really lift weights and if she does she should be doing 15-20 reps. I couldn't help but overhear and I couldn't believe they were telling her that. I didn't say anything......I probably should have.....I tried to catch her afterwards but she was on an elliptical machine and I didn't want to be that guy interrupting her workout? Would you have said something? said something afterwards? Catch her next time I see her? Just forget you heard it?

Talk to her. They were being jerks and could have possibly made her feel really insecure about continuing her strength training workouts...0

Oh I would have marched right up to them and spoken up right then and there, but I am female so it would be easy for me. If I were a male I don't know what I would have done in that situation. But gosh... what is wrong with those guys telling her that line of BS? They must have been afraid she would give them a complex and get bigger muscles than them
Seriously though, poor girl. Hope she does her own research and gets some accurate info.0 -
what a bunch of idiots. I hate these type of guys at the gym. Maybe mention it if you see if her in the weight lifting area. But she is anything like me I would have stopped listening to those guys when the first said anything about women not lifting weights.0
-
I would have had to say something. Weight lifting is not only great for your appearance, but for women it can be a great tool to fight osteoporosis.
I think I would have waited until after and said "Hey, those guys are possibly very misinformed about weightlifting and how it can benefit women. It would be smart to get another opinion before you write it off."0 -
This might be one of the most ridiculous things I've ever heard. Right behind exercising will make you fat (because the author of the article couldn't stop his binge eating after cardio).
It's people like this that make me fear for women who don't know enough to doubt this kind of stuff. Sigh.0 -
Drop a copy of New Rules for Lifting for Women in front of the elliptical?0

Good thing those guys are lifting and keeping their estrogen levels up. I'm sure since they hang so much, their periods have synchonized already.0
-
Hopefully she was smart enough to just laugh it off, but if not hopefully she at least Googled it when she got home!0
-
I would have. THose guys are obviously idiots. I hate when people try to tell you what to do at the gym as if they are experts. She needs to know the truth. Woman who lift weights are hot and strong woman are even hotter. plus how do you lose estrogen?0
-
I would have said something, but again, easier for a woman to do so I think. Man, that is sad.
I also read the article about exercising making you fat! HAHAHAHAHA! It made the guy gain weight because he burned 300-400 calories and then would binge eat 1,000. No joke, that makes you gain weight. I read it on CNN.com. I was so upset at the time, but now, what a laugh. Hopefully the lady does some of her own research. It's a shame those guys needed to butt in and misinform her for any reason.0 -

I would have asked them if they knew this from experience.0

You need to say something to her. I had a girl tell me I was "too fat to squat" once in the weight room, and I almost didn't come back. Don't let her feel like they are right so that she never comes back.0 -
I'd probably have creeped around for a bit (lifted in the same general area) until she was between things and tell her politely that those guys were full of crap and that lifting is perfectly fine and even encouraged for women. Silly people with silly ideas.0

LMBO! Love it!!!!
They were probably insecure, and definitely were spouting nonsense. They didn't ever learn to share? Most gyms have plenty of room in the weight section for them too. I have found that lifting does raise my testosterone level, but not signifigantly, (ONLY MY HUBBY NOTICED, IF YA GET MY MEANIN' :blushing: ). Didn't lower estrogen at all tho. But did increase my confidence level by oh about a factor of a million! lol0 -
I would have said something but chances are good she was smart enough to not listen to them.
I'm ok with people giving someone advice at the gym if it's the right advice. Like my husband will correct people if he sees them doing an exercise wrong and I would hope someone would do the same for me.
These guys must have been meatheads.0 -

HUH? Title says they said lifting brings estrogen levels DOWN not up.... Funny, but doesn't make much sense.0 -
I guess they don't want to share the gym with a girl. Hard to believe people really think crap like this is true.0
-
I would have gone to one of the trainers at the gym and told them what I just heard and ask if its true. Once the trainer stopped laughing, I would point to the two guys and state that those two guys just told that girl over there.......let the trainer set them straight.....0

You're right but it was an off the cuff speed post.0 -

Gotcha. Very funny though! Would've been a good retort either way :flowerforyou:0 -
I know that was a serious screw up on their part, but I had to laugh. It just reminded me of those exaggerated sayings like if you *kitten* you'll grow hair on your hands.
Personally I would have corrected them in the middle of the conversation. Something that ignorant needs to be rectified. If you can catch the woman the next time you see her, just say, "I'm sorry to interrupt, but I remember you from the other day when those two guys misinformed you about lifting heavy weights and I wanted to tell you that it's not true." Then either explain to her why or encourage her to speak to a trainer if there's one on staff there or look it up for herself. I'd also advise her to take any "help" she receives from other members like that with a grain of salt and to look it up when she goes home or has the time.
The only time I take advice from another gym member is if I have no friggin clue how to start a machine (like the day I tried an elliptical and the guy on the one next to me told me how to turn it on and start it) or if I don't know how to use a certain thing that involves putting weights on it. Other than that they can tell me I'm too short to breathe and I wouldn't listen.0 -
Always look for your own answers, with your dr, with the internet. Most meat heads in the gym hate girls in "their" section. I get "dont come in here" looks all the time.0
-
ahahahaha man I almost wish something like that would happen to me. I'd have so many great comebacks.
"Oh, thanks guys, I was uneducated until you came over here and taught me the wonders of broscience. If only I had ... oh, I don't know GOTTEN MY BACHELOR OF SCIENCE DEGREE or something. Then I would know how to distinguish COMPLETE BULL**** from y'kno.... real science. ............. You guys are full of **** get out of here and leave me alone. ... Idiots."
or maybe just "Riiiiight....." *pick up larger weights*
OR totally ***** them out over not only their complete idiocy and lack of grasp on basic physiology, but also their complete and utter disrespect, sexism, degradation and unacceptable RUDEness for saying such things. I would make such a huge stink to the point that everyone in the gym heard it and they wouldn't be able to show their faces in that gym ever again.
Aw man, that would be so satisfying....... Nobody ever does that to me tho. I wonder why...0 -
Okay, the real irony here is that most women have too much, because fat cells & estrogen are pretty good friends...so if in fact this person was losing estrogen b/c they were losing fat, in some scenarios it's a good thing.
Way TMI here, but I have undiagnosed endometriosis (no laproscopy but all the symptoms) and since I've started losing weight (and therefore some estrogen), my symptoms have eased a LOT.
Although I'm sure that's not the context these "gentlemen" (and I use this word with extreme sarcasm) were meaning.
I hope you get an opportunity to talk to her. Maybe she already knows the truth, but it couldn't hurt to offer some support / accurate information.0
