Hello! This is my first post on here, so I apologize for rambling. i've been trying oh so desperately to lose weight for a long time now. First I was just going to the gym a lot more--spinning class twice a week, and yoga twice a week. I've kept it up for 6 months, and yes my body is a lot happier, and I'm more toned, but I hadn't lost a single pound and my clothes don't fit any different--I'd be ok if I just went down a size without weight loss...anyway, so I went to the doctor and had everything checked out. No thyroid problems, I'm vitamin D deficient but I don't think that affects weight? Also full disclosure--I'm on lexapro, and have an IUD, so I'm thinking those two things aren't helping. SO, my doctor told me to count calories. I've been counting for a month now, except of course I went on vacation and said "screw it I'm on vacation" but when I got back I went right back into counting calories and my normal gym routine, it's been two weeks since I've been back from vacation and I still haven't lost anything. I've only been weighing myself Wednesday mornings so as not to get addicted to the scale...Oh, i'm 5'3 and 151.... sorry if this isn't very coherent. Just looking for advice/support. I'm not giving up, but it's discouraging. Between the gym and the calorie counting, AND I've been cooking pretty damn healthy. Sigh.

What kind of food are you eating? Would you be comfortable with making your food diary public?

Are you active aside from your work outs?

Do you eat little and often?

Do you eat before bed? Drink a lot of water? Lots of information missing xxx

I started running about two years ago, and even ran a marathon without really losing any weight. When I joined MFP and started weighing most of my food and writing down everything I ate, it took me about a month before I started seeing results. "Counting calories" won't do it if you aren't being very honest with yourself. And even if you are... it can still take a while for your body to start letting go. You really should to try it for an entire month with no vacations before you allow yourself to get discouraged.

How much do you want to lose? How many cals are you eating? If you work out, do you eat back the cals you uses during exercise?

My weight loss has totally stalled the past three months since starting to work out 5-6 days a week. I have lost several inches though so maybe you should check measurement as well as weight?

    Hi!

First of all remember this: it has probably taken several years to put on the weight and it will not come off quickly. Making this a life change is the most precious thing I have done for myself. I am re-posting what I found here on MFP about your BMR. This is probably why you are not losing.

BMR is the amount of calories needed to survive in a coma. Maintenance calories are BMR x activity level.

Go here to find your BMR: http://www.bmi-calculator.net/bmr-calculator/:happy:

    Chose One:

    Sedentary: BMR x 1.2 = xxxx calories

Lightly Active: BMR x 1.375 = xxxx calories

Moderately Active: BMR x 1.55 = xxxx calories

Vigorously Active: BMR x 1.725 = xxxx calories

Extremely Active: BMR x 1.9 = xxxx calories

So, based on your daily activity level, which depends mostly on your job, you would be at any of those calorie levels. Take that number, subtract 500, and that's your calorie goal. If you burn extra calories by exercising, you add those to your goal.

For example, my BMR is 1793 and I have a sedentary life.

    1793 x 1.2 = 2151 Calories
    2151 – 500 = 1651 Calories

So, if I do not exercise at all today, I will need to burn 1651 Calories

    However, say I burned up 490 calories exercising today. I would take the 1651+ 490 = 2141

This means by the end of the day I would need to have eaten up 2141 calories to lose a pound a week. Make sense?
I know it sounds weird you should eat to lose but remember; keep to a green diet (no light colored foods like breads, pasta etc) and add your protein (fish, chicken, beef) accordingly. I do not always eat a healthy diet but I try.

Also, Milkthistle and a women’s multi-vitamin with energy. My daughter was not losing anything and was frustrated. She quit the gym, started Zumba 2x a week and began to take Milkthistle (cleans your liver, gallbladder, and kidneys Please Google the affects) and she lost 2 lbs! I went and got those two items and this morning; I have a lot of energy and feel pretty good! I am not really too hungry but I am following my diet anyway as it is a life change for me. Just another suggestion.

You can add me as a friend and I will help any way I can. I did try a diet once and it worked. I have sent this to several people already. Here it is:

Breakfast: 2 eggs any way, 2 piece of crisp bacon, tomato juice and coffee/hot tea
    Snack: Fruit
Lunch: Meat (fish, chicken, beef, pork) cooked anyway you like and as much as you like. Veggies (green) as much as you want. I sautéed my mixed veggies in butter even!
Snack: A different fruit than the morning snack.
Dinner: Meat (fish, chicken, beef, pork) cooked anyway you like and as much as you like, but not what you ate at lunch. Veggies (green) as much as you want, but not what you ate at lunch (like salad). Put whatever dressing on you want too.
Snack: Tomato juice or any other 100% pure juice

I laughed at first but after three days I was so full all the time I didn’t want to eat. By the end of 6 days I rested and on the 7th day I weighed. I had lost 5 lbs! No exercise that week so I imagine I would have lost more had I did my exercises. This might be something you want to try. Just a suggestion. It may not work for everyone but it did for me.

  • Do you weigh your food? Do you look at serving size on packages? i used to think a serving was what I wanted to eat. Not so. Make sure you weigh and measure your food. Don't excercise too much. Muscle weighs more then fat. So if your not seeing weight lose your probible building a lot of muscle. Let me know how your doing. Good luck!

Definitely what the first response said. We would have to know more details. Plus staying within your calories is great but what even better is the type of calories you are eating. Quality vs. quantity is so true with weight loss. You have to make sure you are eating more nutritious meals. The type of food you eat can still hinder weight loss. I don't believe that every calorie is the same. I am a label reader now. I check to make sure what the saturated fat content is, the amount of fat calories vs. calories, the sugar content. I try my hardest to stay clear of processed foods. I have a few things that I haven't given up but I'm getting there. this is a process and if you want it bad enough you wont give up, you will just try different things until you finally figure out what works for you. every body is different. Some ppl are sensitive to sugar, some to carbs, some to protein. It might take a month or two but you will get there. I would definitely open your diary to public so you can get help from people who can give you advise on what your eating. I have had people give me replacement ideas and suggestions on what I should avoid. It is definitely worth it.

Thank you everyone! I just opened my diary to public, and then groaned because you can all see the pizza I had this weekend. I think my hardest problem is that I am really afraid of getting too obsessive. I love food. Not like compulsive eating or anything, but I'm a "foodie" I guess. And I tend to let myself go on the weekends...not calorie wise, but quality of foodwise. I really am trying to avoid processed foods. I find it a lot easier during the work week. But i'm not sure how much my calorie diet reflects this. I have been cooking a lot more with things like kale, portobello mushrooms, sweet potatoes, quinoa...but I find it hard to find the calories for my weird veggies meals on here, so I kind of find the closest match in the list, which is sometimes processed (I made a steak the other night and totally just picked an outback steakhouse steak because I figured it probably had more than my calories...and I've never made steak before, it was kind of a foodie experiment. so judge if you want, but it was delicious and I only ate half.) And no, I'm not weighing my food, maybe I should as this has been a lot of guessing on my part. I really did think that just being more aware and eating whole foods would help. Oh and I'm 27 (female), 5'3", I weigh 151 and I'm eating around 1,400 calories a day. I was 125 through college and then I graduated and put on 25lbs....no idea how!!
I'm sure a lot of this is impatience on my part, so I really really am going to keep at it!!! Thanks for the support everyone!! Sorry this was so venty. I really am dedicated to my body.
