How to find good running shoes?

I've never bought a pair of running shoes. I know fit is important, and I've also heard that it's important to go somewhere reputable where the shoes haven't been sitting on the shelf for a long time because the foam won't be as good.

What should I look for in a running shoe? Any suggestions on types of shoes (cheaper is always better!)? What's a good store to buy from?

Well, for running-specific shoes, especially if you've never bought any before, it's a good idea to look up a running-specific store in your area, and then call ahead to see if they have the ability to analyze your stride, foot shape, all those good things, before recommending one. Since all people run slightly differently, it's not a great idea to just buy a shoe based on someone else's personal experience, unless you know more about your own individual form.

Try Googling "running store" in your area, and go from there. I wouldn't suggest going to a major chain store for shoes the first time, because they usually don't have specialists that can actually analyze your form and recommend a good shoe based on that. I know it's kind of rough being that specific in terms of search, especially depending on the area you live in (I know for me, the nearest store that does that is about 2 1/2 hours away), but it's definitely worth it, since the right shoe can save you a lot of misery in the beginning. :)

+1 on going to a running specialty store.

What works for me way be completely wrong for you depending on if you over or under-pronate etc. If you can it's best to go during the week as you're more likely to deal with a full time staffer who knows what he or she is talking about. Don't feel pressured into buying the most expensive shoes on the rack and try on several different brands. The shoes should fit well and be comfortable right out of the box - if the sales person says something along the lines of having to break the shoes in run for your life.

Runners World has some great resources to help you identify what you may be looking for in a shoe

but remember, they're advertiser funded - the advice is generally very good but not always unbiased.
  • I've been a runner for a few years and the only thing that i don't buy cheap are my shoes for running! My advice is to go to a local running store (not the big stores like ****s, Sports Authority ect) a small, personal store that the people are actually runners and are there because they love the sport and want you to love it as well. As for brands, that'll all depend on what you like; I've been to a lot of different brands, not one particular brand is better than others...it's just what you feel is comfortable and suites your foot. Good luck! and Congratulations!!
