Hello all,
I'm a 22 year old New Yorker spending her summer teaching in Queensland Australia. I am living in a PARADISE!!! I live on the beach, and everyone here is up at the crackass of dawn running, biking, swimming, kayaking, you name it, the people here have done it by the time I wake up to go to school. Makes me feel like kinda sloppy.
I used to do Track in college, but now it's overs and I have found that my body is getting less toned and more..... ehh. I just want to be happy with my health, and I'm scared that if I don't start tracking my eating habits and exercise, I will become overweight like my entire family. So, here I am. I have been studying this site and seeing how motivated everyone is, and I just wanted to say congratulations. Everyone is doing so well! I hope to become one of the successful food journalists
p.s. - I want to train for a half marathon when I get home. Kind of going to be a long journey I think. I only run about 3-4 miles comfortably right now. (I think I was meant to be a sprinter. ha!) Any tips? Stories?

Hello and Welcome.
Three to four miles is the right mileage to start training. Why wait till later. I started in January and restarted in March to work up to three miles. Then trained for a 10K (which I do in 2 weeks). Then I start training for my 1/2 marathon. So in 1 year I will go from not being able to run 1 minutes to running 13.1 miles.
I envy you. I am trying to convince my husband that when he graduates he should try to get a post doc in Australia.
Good Luck. It is easier to stay healthier than have to try to become healthier later.0 -

I think I'd like to try this at some point, but I feel I need to drop a few more pounds to be able to safely participate. Any good sites/info sources for TOTAL beginners to the running scene? Thx!
