Sugar

I was just wondering if anyone else constantly has the issue of going over on their sugar intake on MFP. MFP says I'm supposed to have 31g but I usually end up being between 60-80g. Most of the time, this is due to fruit sugars. If it's mostly fruit, is this an issue?

For example... I made myself a smoothie with a banana, frozen unsweetened fruit mix, 1% milk and some shelled hemp seeds. It's 383 calories but 41 (!!!) grams of sugar.

60-80g is sugar is fine under most situations. You shouldn't listen to MFP.

Natural sugars won't hurt you, anyway (unless you go mad on them lol) it's refined and added stuff you're supposed to limit.

You just need to look at where your sugar is coming from. Because yours is coming from fruit, you are ok with 60-80. If your sugar is coming from refined sugars (cane sugar, corn syrup, ect) then you would need to make some adjustments. Make sure you read labels on things like yogurt because often sugar is hiding in these assumed healthy foods. Making your owns smoothies from natural ingredients like you do is an awesome way to keep track of exactly what is in your food. Great job!

One day I tried it stay on track with my sugar and it was tough and there was no fruit in my diet. I agree that the sugar limit is very unrealistic.

Personally, I just hid the sugars counter, and the fat counter. I think the thing to remember is that MFP is more of a suggested guideline rather than hard and fast rules. Then again, I only joined on Monday, so what do I know? :-)

I ignore the sugar from fruit, I feel the benefits outweigh the sugar and it's almost the only sugar I get.

I don't agree with your statement above about how your body processes sugar from fruit. Sugar is sugar and your body doesn't know what source it comes from. It just sees sucrose, fructose and it's all a form of glucose to your system. Fruit generally has more fiber which, in theory would cause your body to process the sugar more slowly and not spike blood glucose but it's been suggested the same is true of other sugars as they are not consumed in a vacumn but along with your other nutrients in a day that would also contain fiber. the exception is tha person that starts their day with a couple of sodas and solid food but that person is probably not on MFP tryng to improve.

To the OP, I echo that MFP default goals are set in some irrational ways. Do some research on how much sugar a person your size should intake and reset your goal for that and stay within it. If you stay within your deficit limits, you will lose weight whether your calories are from sugar or protein or fats or whatever. For overall health, a good macronutrient balance and a reasonably low amount of sugar from all sources is fine. IMHO, when your sugar or carbs in general, which converts to blood glucose, are too high it causes 2 potential problems; it spikes insulin and that causes cravings which makes diet plan compliance more difficult. That said, enjoy fruit in a reasonable dose. Aside from it's sugar content, there are all kinds of micro nutrients in fruit that are beneficial for overall health.
