I am considering buying a heart rate monitor. However, I do not really have a lot of money (about $30) I found a few heart rate monitors in Walmart and I was wondering if these were any good?

Their cheapest one, the 28$ ish one, Sportline, is good but their is no chest strap, it doesn't figure in your weight, and tends to show me really high calorie burns, usually 200-300 cal higher than what MPF shows, that does know my stats. Other than that It's great but, calories burned is the reason why I purchased it. Example today did a 70 min fast walk, MPF said 400 cals, Sportline watch said 847. Big discrepancy. I am saving up for a more accurate HR monitor :)

    Hope that helps.

Yep, I would say save till you can afford one with chest strap. I have the Polar FT7 and love it. I have seen several post on here that the ones without chest straps are a waste of money. You are buying this to invest in your health you want accuracy. Best Wishes.

There are some options on Amazon for a little over 30 that might suit you as well. Also, get the chest strap.

I'd put the money aside until you can afford one with a chest strap. you may get lucky on ebay or in a second hand store (even freecycle or craigslist)...
Point is, if you can't really afford it, you are just going to be even more disappointed if it doesn't work as you'd like it to.

What about buying it with CraigList, Ebay, etc?
You can probably buy the chest strap separate, from the manufacturer, if you don't want to wear a used one.

The foundational thing is for a HRM to be useful for calorie calculation it MUST have a chest strap. Even though the ones without a chest strap will give you a calorie number, it is a useless number that is completely inaccurate. They put it in there to sell HRM because people want that calorie number, but as I said, without a chest strap it is completely inaccurate. You would do better just guessing your calorie burn based on perceived exertion. Thus, if they don't have a chest strap, save your money until you can afford one with a chest strap. I have a sportline that I got at Wal-mart for around $50-60 which has a chest strap, and it works fine. A polar that would allow entry of VO2max would be more accurate, but this works fine for me at this point.

Here is a helpful blog post on HRM http://www.myfitnesspal.com/blog/Azdak/view/the-real-facts-about-hrms-and-calories-what-you-need-to-know-before-purchasing-an-hrm-or-using-one-21472

I bought mine off of Amazon for around $30. It is the Pyle HRM. It has a chest strap and calculates calories too.

Make sure they calculate calories and not just your HR. I prefer one with a chest strap because it gives you up to date HR, where I think the ones that are only a watch, you have to touch your finger on it and that is how it checks your HR.

Now, I have a lot of girls in my Zumba class that use those from Walmart and love them, but you do have to touch it with your finger every now and then to update your HR, where with the chest strap it is constantly sending that info to the watch.

My cheap one from Amazon, has me enter my VO2Max, so I feel for the money it is pretty good!!

I got the Sportline DUO1010. It was about $59 at Best Buy but I have found them cheaper. It has the chest strap also. It was a little hard to figure out at first but now that I have I love it. It has different settings for the type of activities you want to track. Calories, etc.
  • I found the Pyle HRM on Amazon and it looks very good. It is also only $29 which is in my price range! I think I will get this one since it has a lot of positive reviews and has the chest strap :)

I do not think you will be disappointed! I did have to Google search VO2Max, because you have to enter this...but I figure that I have a close enough estimation on it.
  • Just bought it; it should be here by Wed. at the earliest and Friday at the latest.

Does it also have you enter age, height, weight, and sex along with the VO2Max? If so that is a great deal. I am actually tempted to replace my current HRM with it.
  • I just got my Pyle HRM today! How do I set it up?
