I have no idea if this would work, but it sounds like something fun to make with my 6 year old.

public service announcement - being home fighting an infection has left me unusual amounts of free time on my hands, so i assembled a glitter jar and must say it's adorable, but LEAVE OUT THE VEGETABLE OIL. it is not a necessary component and causes the glitter to coagulate into oily blobs and float at the top of the jar, unable to do any 'settling' because they're all of the glitter particles are stuck within the oil. before i added the oil, however, the glitter was swimming nicely in the water. food coloring and sparkly beads are fun additions. just no oil.

wouldn't this be a sweet way to do a *time out* for the little ones. They have to sit still and watch the glitter until it all settles then they can be done with time out!

I love shiny things! I AM part raccoon I think...
I'm going to have to figure out how long the glitter will float. If I can work it so that it takes 5-10 mins to settle, it'll be a great way to get me moving and start exercising. You know, for those "I'll workout for 5 mins, THEN if I want to stop, I will..." (and you don't stop) days.

    Cute idea.
Also for moms of little ones and 'time outs'. It'll distract, calm and time the kid.

I found this on Tumblr and thought I'd share this with people that need a little calming.

    Glitter jars:

"I was taught about glitter jars during my time as an inpatient. I learnt the magic of glitter during a self-soothe class as part of an emotional coping skills lesson.

There’s no science, no counting, no acceptance and no forceful methods involved in the alteration of your emotions during use of the glitter jar - just distraction.

Making a glitter jar is simple. You will need:

1 jar (with a lid of course!)
    1/10 vegetable oil
    9/10 water
    glitter - lots of!
    food colouring
    anything else shiny
Add the water and vegetable oil together. Add a few drops of food colouring, all of the glitter and anything else shiny. Put the lid on (tight!) and shake it.

When you want to cut / binge / scream / cry, shake the glitter jar and watch until the glitter is settled. It’ll calm you and hopefully the emotion will pass."

And if you would like to see a visual, here's a link to a video I found.
    I like this combination better.
There's different ingredients(and you don't have to use them all), but it's a better alternative to the first one I posted.
