Egg Whites

Okay, there was a recent egg question up so I will ask mine...are egg whites really better than whole eggs??

I have been hearing two different things across the board. I do have cholesterol that is borderline high...so I am trying to definitely eat healthy by doing the egg white thing for breakfast, but are egg whites really so much better?

I would love the help, maybe even from some professionals.

Thanks!

Your going to get conflicting reports. And there are so many variables to consider. I don't think anyone can for sure say if the whole egg will raise it for you.
Personally I'd limit whole eggs to a few a week and stick mainly with the whites.
I wouldn't cut out the whole egg period. There is a lot of good nutrients in it. But I wouldn't eat it every day either.

With my family history, this is a topic that really interests me. Basically, recent studies demonstrate that in most people, blood cholesterol and dietary cholesterol are only weakly linked. However, some people have a genetic response where there is a much stronger link between dietary cholesterol and blood cholesterol. If you have high cholesterol, a family history of heart disease or have diabetes, you may want to err on the side of caution and keep the amount of cholesterol in your diet to a sensible, moderate amount. A good explanation, with links to applicable studies can be found here:

  • I've read that the whole egg is good for you, but only eat the yolk in moderation. I eat eggs almost every day, and I love a hard boiled egg, which is only 17 calories without the yolk! I usually only eat a whole egg once a day IF that, but allow myself as many egg whites as i feel like :)

Quite often I'll have 4 eggs for breakfast, I really don't worry about the cholesterol but I do have 2 whole eggs and then 2 egg whites to reduce the fat a bit.. Can't really comment on if it's really that much better just to have the whites but I'd say if you have a healthy balanced diet not to sweat it too much.

Dietary cholesterol has very minimal effect on your blood serum cholesterol. Eat the entire egg. It's good for you.

In my years upon years of diet experimentation, (and up until this time, I count all my previous work as experiments) but I really think that I have lost the most weight when eating whole eggs rather than whites and especially more than substitutes. Every nutritionist that I trust states that eggs are natures perfect protein. I'm always more filled until lunch when I eat eggs.

    That's just what I've experienced.

Maybe it's just me, but I find egg whites completely tasteless and therefore pointless. If I eat an egg, it's the whole thing.

If you have high cholesterol: try taking niacin(nicotinic acid) supplements to reduce it and increase the good cholesterol.

I eat about 20-28 whole eggs a week and don't seem to have a problem.

I would miss runny egg yolks on toast if I just ate the whites.
