I took part in my first race today, it was a 5 mile race in the wind and rain. I managed to run for the first mile and then had to walk the other 4 because my hip was giving me loads of pain but i finished  I came 714th out of 714 with a time 1:23:10 but i'm so proud of myself as i was injured. I have a 10k in May and really want to beat this time, any suggestions on how i can do this?

You ran a mile more than me today! Well done!

Now you have a benchmark for future races and you can go into them confidently that you can only go upwards! Great job. I hope to join you in the racing world... at some point ;)
  • Nice job! I haven't raced since high school track and I don't have the confidence to do so yet.

It doesn't matter what place you came in. Look at what you did, you finished your first race.

I truly admire people like you. You can't control who else enters a race, or what time they do it in, all you can control is you, your time, your speed, your finishing, and despite hip trouble you still finished - I think you won :)

^^^Exactly! all you can control is you, don't sweat the other people. Kudos for you for signing up and getting out there...that's the biggest step.!

Regarding finishing faster next time....maybe try more walk/running (like Couch 2 5K)?..hopefully you can get injury free (is it your shins?) Your pace was 16:23....so if you want to 'beat' your pace for the 10K you'll need to do 'better' than 1:41.

thanks for the advice  Its my hip that hurts, my knees and shins are fine and its only my left side that hurts. There is no pain in my thigh either just the hip area. I'm in the middle of my c210k so hopefully i will finish it before the actual race.
