Hey, I started running about 3 weeks ago slowly working up my running time, I can run for about 3 mins before walking and doing it again. Anyway I feel that I get out of breath very easily and for longer than I should, im still getting trying to get my breath back after the 3 min walk before I start running again and after running I have a slightly flemmy throat for 30 mins to 1 hour after, during the run my lower throat/upper chest feels cold, this really puts me off running. Could the flemmy throat/cold felling just be down to the cold weather as I heard about exercise induced asthma and the place where I read about it those symptoms kinda sound like it. I have not had any asthma in the past (as far as I know) and haven't really been active since I was about 12 years old, im 20 in a couple of months, so it's been quite a while since I've done any real exercise, so I guess the getting out of breath really easily is most likely down to that.

Basically it would be nice to get some information on how a begging runner should be progressing and if its normal to feel like this while running given my circumstances, I understand I won't be running a marathon after 3 weeks but was hoping for it to get a little easier. Also if anyone has EIA it would also be nice to to get rid of my concerns about that hopefully. Also after 3 weeks only being able to run for 3-4 mins at a time seems very poor, is that ok or should I be doing more?

My first reaction is that you're probably trying to run too fast.

Dial it back a bit, walk for a few minutes, run (slowly) for 1 and then walk for a few minutes & repeat. A week or two later make it 2 minutes of (slow) running with walking breaks in between and gradually build up this way.

It's hard for me to even guess where you should be after 3 weeks without any idea of what your starting point was.

If you're still experiencing breathing problems at the slower speeds / shorter runs see your doctor.

Thanks for the response but it makes sense I did notice last week that my running slowly speeds up as I go, I think im concentrating on other stuff too much like my breathing and running form then letting the speed tumble. I'll make a conscious effort tomorrow to keep it at a steady slow pace and see how that goes.

    Thanks for the advice.

I taught myself how to run. I didn't use any program, but there is that C25K program that I heard is pretty good. I started out by walking and every day I just added a further and further away landmark until after about a month or two I was able to do 2 miles, now I am up to 6 miles in about an hour. I have also did alternating 4 mph walk for a minute and 8 mph run for a minute. The main thing is making sure that you keep your arms and legs pumping and getting the motion in at any speed. The speed will come, just don't expect for it to happen overnight. Take your time and you will be where you want before you know it.

Went on a run today and just focused on shortening my strides and bringing the pace down, like I said before this is my 3rd week of running and I was struggling at the 3 min mark. Today I was doing just over 5 min intervals (I know it doesn't sound like much to you guys but an improvement for me) and I was feeling a lot better after, thanks for the advice, so simple but it worked a treat :)

Sometimes the simplest solution is the best, glad it worked. (I learned a lot of these lessons the hard way.....and a few years ago I could barely run around the block myself, keep it up!)
