Your Opinion on Protein Shakes

I'm considering starting to have one before my workouts in the morning, but first I'd like to find out a little bit of what they are exactly, and most importantly, what they taste like! I don't want to try to choke down a drink that tastes like chalk or whatever. Anybody have an opinion on them they'd like to share?

I have started using Precision Engineered - Whey Protein (Banana). I use it before and after my workout at the moment as I have very damaged calf muscles and need to be careful with them.
It tastes a little strange mixed with water, tomorrow I am going to try having my before shake with milk.0 -
I'm using the Body by Vi Protein shakes, love, love, love the taste & they have so many recipes! I take mine within 30 minutes after my workout (as suggested) to help repair/build muscle tone.0

Having a protein shake is one great way to get heathly calories in and some extra protein. Having a high protein intake requires energry to burn so this will certainly boost your metabolism to burn fat. Plus, it keeps you full while repairing your muscles after an intense workout.
You can go to the grocery store or GNC store to get your protein mix. Just be sure that it is 100% Whey. One of my favorites is LisaLynn mix you can go to lisalynnfitness.com or you can buy a buy brand at the store called Eat Good, Feel Great Pure Protien mix and is much cheaper but the quality is still good.
The Lisa Lynn shake mix is pretty spendy but it is good. She is a great fitness trainer and has been on Dr. Oz. Her website has some great tips.
If you like coffee, then see my receipe below for yummy but low-cal Cafe Mocha Protein Shake.
Cafe Mocha Protein Shake Recipe:
1. Chocolate Protein mix ( follow serving direction from label)
2. Add 4 ounces of cold coffee (you can add more coffee depending to your liking - I usually put in 6 ounces from coffee brewed - make sure coffee cools down a little bit. I usually pour the coffee in a cup and lit it cool down)
3. Add 3 to 4 ounces of water ( you can add less to make the coffee taste stronger, I usually put in 2 ounces of water)
4. Never let water or coffee exceed a total of 8 ounces.
5. Blend for 30 to 40 seconds
6. Now Add 3 to 5 ice cubes
7. Add 1 TBSP of French Silk Cream or Almond Milk (optional)
7. Blend Again for about 30 to 40 seconds
140 calories, 25 grams of protein, 3 grams fat - Calories depend on the brand you buy.
Alternatives for a different type of taste:
1. Chocolate/Berry Protein Shake: Follow the receipe above minuse the coffee and add one or two of the following fruits:
Add 1/2 cup of blueberries or strawberries or raspberries.
2. Chocolate, Banana, Peanut Butter Shake: Follow the receipe above but only add 1/2 to 1 banana and 1 TBSP of peanut butter.
3. Creamy Chocolate Protein shake: Follow the receipe above but just add a 1 or 2 TBSP of French Silk Vanilla or Natural Almond Milk.
Note for the alternative receipes you can always add 6 to 8 ounces of water. The less water you add the thicker the shake is .
Depending the reciepies above you can average from 250 calories with 8 grams of fat and 25 grams of protein.
Hope this helps!0 -
There are 2 most common types of protein out there - there are many more than just 2 but these are the most common. Whey protein and Whey Isolate protein. Whey protein (or complex) is a refined whey (the scum off the top of milk - a byproduct of cheese). Whey Isolate protein is the same stuff but further processed so as to remove the lactose in increase the content of protein. Isolate is a good choice if you find you have an intolerance the the whey - this is usually indicated by nasty gas
Whey complex is usually less expensive has a lower protein content by volume. Some say the complex provides more nutrition in that it provides the components that help protein boost your immune system.

I don't believe them to give you anything more than what you can get from your diet, unless you are an athlete or bodybuilder. Fact is many of the nutrients found in these shakes, you get plenty of if you eat right, including protein. The only thing it does have that you may not from your diet is caffein. Most shakes have Guarana (ie: same thing that's found in most energy drinks) and that's where the "energy boost" comes from.
So my 10cents is that you don't need it (again, unless you're an athlete...), but if you chose to, make sure to read the labels as although some of them look pretty simple and "natural", to have read a few myself, the ingredients vary allot and many come with a paragraph (in size 4 font!) of disclaimers/warnings.0
