Hi Guys
I have recently really upped my protein and I think it is causing me to always have a bloated feeling in my stomach because I think it is not digesting it all. Has anyone else experienced this, should i lower my protein or will my body get used to it? the bloating is becoming unbearable ;(

lean protein does not cause bloating for me...on the other hand, when I get protein from steak and such, I become bloated. What do you normally eat to get your protein up?0

Your digestive enzymes could be outta wack, you can try some digestive enzyme supplements.0

Avoid dairy. If you're drinking protein shakes, avoid Whey. Try that for a week and see how that feels. Btw, there is dairy by-products in tuna cans as well.... Avoid those too.0

I just started taking a protein supplement and it is a whey protein.
Is there any reason why you should avoid whey? Or is that just if you're having bloating?0 -

this ALWAYS happens to me when I go low-carb (meaning eating mostly just salads and meat and fruit and maybe beans). It feels awful so I don't go low carb anymore. I eat healthy carbs like fruit, oatmeal, whole wheat stuff, beans, brown rice, quinoa, etc. As long as I'm eating this stuff as well as ample amounts of protein my bloating and gas isn't bad, just normal, lol.
I totally understand what you're going through. Many low carb or high protein diets warn that you might feel bloated at first, but for me it lasts long term, so maybe everybody is different in this respect. I don't know if you're doing low carb or just high protein but if you're doing low carb I suggest you not be too extreme about it and only cut carbs/increase protein moderately. that's what works for me. Currently I'm aiming for 40/30/30 carbs/protein/fat and I'm not feeling bloated or anything.0 -

thanks for all your replies. i wouldnt say im doing low carb just upped my protein because i have seriously upped my exercise. i have been having whey shakes and i think it might be the lactose in them that is affecting me, that or just that my body isnt used to digesting this much protein. i was thinking of buying bromelain as a digestive enzyme and maybe some soya protein shake instead0

a bit OT...but for those eating beans: when soaking dried beans, put a bit of baking soda in with the beans when you soak them overnight. in the morning, there be a very lovely foam on top. rinse. then put the beans in fresh water and bring to a boil. then drain. you can also add a pinch of baking soda to the boiling water, but be careful as it will foam up and could over flow. this gets out the 'stuff' that causes gas and bloating. much cheaper than beano!0

Came here to echo kim. If you are getting protein in the form of dairy or whey, these things are known to cause bloating. Some people are particularly sensitive to lactose; you may be one, even though in large amounts, ANYONE would have trouble digesting lactose.
If you really need to get more protein powder in, I would suggest drinking it mixed with water and thinking of it as a supplement rather than a meal.0 -
Hey are any of you guys still around on here?
After years of sensitivities and digestive issues I decided enough was enough and started to eat meat, gluten and dairy again, i'd hammered funny diets for years and still felt the same (albeit a little prouder via my achievements)
Strangely enough just accepting the issues i'd been facing, letting go of worry and starting to eat what I want again improved a lot of issues i'd been having as if by magic. however, an issue I am currently facing is bloating! Quite a nuisance whilst I am hammering the gym 6 times a week to get a nice flat stomach, the rest of my body is getting buff but my gut is yuck because of the bloat.
Now, i'm in three minds... It may be the gluten, it may be the diary, it may be the high protein (lean protein rather than fatty meats). I'd dread to go down that route of worry and food restriction again so am just a little curious as to what your experiences were with this now that some time has passed by, how are you all getting along with the bloating?0
