Hey Guys,
I'm new to the work out scene and I'm not sure exactly when to drink the protein shakes like whey protein? Is it something I should do after working out and should I expect to gain weight when drinking it or will it help me lose weight? I guess I'm just looking for some general knowledge about this. Thanks in advance!

Bump because I'm curious to know what people say since I'm thinking about doing shakes.0

Protein timing is a touchy subject. It has been suggested having it shortly after working out may benefit you.
Any excess calories, regardless of source will cause you to gain weight.
Protein shakes used in place of meals (usually with other ingredients) help many people feel full longer and therefore lose weight.0 -
I drink one in the morning and after my workout. I do this because i am weightlifting and protein helps with muscle building. As far as gaining weight as long you stay within your daily calories then no. As far as helping with weightloss I don't think directly it will, indirectly if you are weight lifting using protein shakes will help your muscles heal and more muscles equal better resting metabolism and calorie burns..Protein timing is a touchy subject. Doesn't matter when you take your shakes.
However, I tend to take a whey protein shake after I workout because I am never in the mood to make myself a high protein meal right after I get home from the gym.0 -
Okay thanks guys for all your help!0

Is a good breakdown on it for beginners. I don't buy the whole 'have to drink right after a workout' bit, but some people believe it. I say find a time that's most conveinent for you (for me it's in the morning as my breakfast).
There's much cheaper brands, but I absolutely love syntha-6 (note: it's higher in fat and carbs than other powders so be warned). It mixes well and tastes good. Chocolate peanut butter with milk and PB2 rocks.0 -
I drink Cellucor Isolated Whey (in Milk Chocolate) within 30 minutes of finishing my workout (if the workout is intense). I wouldn't drink it after a neighborhood stroll.
I've noticed that my muscles recover much quicker and the soreness dissipates, which allows me to do pretty intense workouts (40 minutes of circuit strenght training ending with 30 min of cardio) every other day (with steady cardio in the inbetween days- 40 to 60 minutes in the 'zone'). I do this 5-6 times per week. With yoga/stretching session-only days on the rest days.
The "recovery" (resulting, allegedly from the glucosamine in the shake) effect on my muscles could be totally placebo. HOWEVER, before I starting drinking the shake, after each workout I would be STARVING! Like I would get home and eat my body weight in whatever I could find. Having my shake after exercise fills me up really well, curbs my appetite until my next scheduled meal or snack time. SO it helps me keep my schedule.
The cellucor is pricy; about 50 bucks for 30 servings. But the milk chocolate is only 130 calories per serving, low in fat and carbs, and it mixes so well with water, that I don't even need milk or bananas or Almond butter. It also tastes better than the GNC or any other brand I've tried.
I don't use it as a meal replacement, but I know some people do.
Hope this helps.
