Great report, I somehow doubt there will ever be a 50K in my future....maybe a full marathon in a couple of years.

I can relate to the words of encouragement.....last year I walked the last 7K of a half marathon (IT band issue) and I was getting ready to punch the next person who said "looking great" or "you can do it".

    Thank you all!

I didn't mention this in my race report, but I really think the problem with my knees may be the meds I'm on. I take Pravastatin and Fenofibrate. Pravastatin is a generic statin drug for cholesterol and Fenofibrate is mostly for triglycerides. My doc prescribed both. He put me on the statin as a preventative. He says it makes the lining of your arteries slick and helps prevent heart attacks, etc. That's probably true. However, my mostly Vegan diet means I clock in about 120 on total cholesterol and all of my blood work is excellent. Triglycerides could be better, but it's mostly a function of all of the fruit I eat. It's easier to eat fruit than it is Kale unfortunately!

Anyway, I went to the Mayo clinc website and found out a few things. One of the deleterious effects of statin drugs are muscle weakness and joint pain. Woah! Furthermore, when I read about Pravastatin, it says that I should not take it with Fenofibrate without good reason. When I read about Fenofibrate, it says that I shouldn't take it with Pravastatin without good reason. Hmmmn. My doc didn't mention this and I don't think a good reason exists in my case. My blood chemistry is great. My diet is great and I run my butt off. I think I need a second opinion.

Maybe unwise, but I stopped taking both drugs yesterday. I want to find a new doc and get a second opinion. If I don't need that crap and it makes my knees hurt, then to H-E-Double Hockey Sticks with it!

I also started taking Glucosamine and Enzyme CoQ10. Anyhoo, I hope that helps. If my knees get better, then I have a 50 miler on my schedule for the end of July. But not if I have to walk the last 30 miles of it!

An awesome report! Great job on your 50K. Now I'm thinking of mine again. I keep putting it on and off the burner. Well, it was the 50 mile but I think a 50K should be first..... We'll see.

I wear calf sleeves and they help me a lot! A thorn bush torn a hole in one of them on my trail run with Clay this past Saturday, so I took the sewing maching to them. I think they will still be good until I can invest in another pair.

Awesome job! You must feel great!!

Also, here is something my Beachbody coach mentioned resently.....a product that might help.

The best supplement combination for joint/knee/ankle pain is glucosamine, hyaluronic acid, MSM and chondroitin, especially if you have a damaged joint. MSM/glucosamine and condroitin will help repair the joint. Taking glucosamine alone is ok...the three together offer the better potential. All 4 is the best. MSM stands for Methylsulfonylmethane. It's a naturally occurring compound in some plants. The benefits normally attributed to it are in the anti-inflammatory realm. Combined with condroitin and glucosamine, it makes the most potent trifecta of anti-arthritis and joint pain supplements out there. If you can find one that also has hyaluronic acid, you have a supplement that has all of the natural building blocks to repair damaged cartilage and increase fluidity of the joint.

If you're looking for a good all around brand in the U.S. for the majority of the run of the mill vitamins and Joint stuff, it would be Solgar. Solgar can be found online, healthy food stores, high end grocery stores like Whole Foods and Wegman's.
It's the top all around and easily available supplement company in the U.S.. Solgar has several different formulations for joint pain. The best one has MSM, glucosamine, condroitin and hyaluronic acid (all 4 joint compounds) and is Shellfish free, and vegan. SOLGAR: Extra Strength: Glucosamine, Hyaluronic Acid, Chondroitin, MSM - 120 tablets, $31

Great job! Seriously long distance and it's an accomplishment to finish well under your 8 hour goal! My knees hurt sometimes with distance, though I'm nowhere near up to 50K (12K, yes). I can totally relate to your feeling that words of encouragement sometimes feel very condescending, I've been the very last one in (very small, participant-wise) races before. I hope I can get through the challenge of a 50K someday.

I've got the glucosomine mixture you suggested on my shopping list Christine and also calf sleeves. I've heard great things about them. :)
