Don't cut the root off!!!! Then you wont cry!

Why didn't I remember that when I cut the first onion I needed???

Chewing gum while cutting them totally works too!

Or you could try what I do....
Light a little tea light and set next to your cutting board. The flame burns off the fumes from the onion. No crying!

I learned a trick when I worked at a Subway.

Put them in the freezer for a few minutes before you cut them. The freezer freezes the water and stuff that makes you cry, in the onions. Then when you cut them it won't release it as quickly.

I tried the matchstick between your teeth thing from The Help, not really expecting it to work. Worked like a charm!
(Not to mention I love the look on my husband's face when he comes into the kitchen to see me biting a match stick) :P

Oh man! I used to turn on a burner and now I live in a place with an electric stove. Totally going to light a candle, thanks!

I don't cry. I do eat the onion before I finish cutting it, that gets annoying.

Also annoying, is the very slight smell left on your hands after cutting the onions. :( I have no steel wool to cleanse it.

Hold your tongue out, mouth open...like a dog. Sounds ridiculous, but it actually works.

I've tried chewing mint gum and it never worked. =/

I also tried the candle thing.. it worked when I had about 5 going but now I don't have room in my tiny kitchen to do that. My counters are so tiny in the apartment its retarded!

I have REALLY sensitive eyes I guess.

My granda ma always told me to put it in the freezer a couple minutes before cutting them
And they wouldn't burn your eyes as much. I still, to this day haven't tried it but I will soon!(:

This works very well. I used to do this when I had to hand-chop onions.

I was using them so often that I bought a food chopper so now I NEVER have to cut them again. WIN.

Sprinkle some salt on your hands and the cutting board/knife and the smell goes away! Magic :)

The only thing that works for me is, cutting them after they've been in the fridge and are cold all the way through. FYI - After you're finished cutting onions and garlic, rub all the surfaces of your hand that have touched them on stainless steel ( your sink) under a trickle of running water and it gets rid of the oniony/garlicy smell!

A little bit of baking soda also takes the smell out nicely. Just scrub a little with a hot wet rag on your cutting surface.

Personally, what I do to avoid crying is get my husband to chop them. ;)

Seriously, he's the designated chopper. I like cooking but hate prepping...

I don't do it often, but having a fan blowing next to them keeps the vapor out of my eyes.
If I have to cut an onion I may as well cut 3 onions. And if I'm cutting that many onions I may as well caramelize them.
