Breakfast?

I know people say breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but I just don't feel hungry until mid afternoon so I don't eat until then. Shall I force myself to eat a little bit when I wake up? Or shall I just wait until I'm hungry to eat? Just looking for other people's views and opinions.

It sounds like you should eat something earlier in the day rather than waiting until mid-afternoon.

Breakfast needn't be a heavy meal or eaten the moment one wakes up. Perhaps try a handful of nuts and dried fruit mid morning, or even within a couple of hours of waking to see if eating earlier will benefit you. Look at your overall eating patterns - if waiting to eat often means you choose less healthful foods later on, or if it means you aren't taking in enough calories or nutrients, or if you find yourself with low energy in the mornings, then eating earlier certainly makes sense.

Hey, I too don't feel hungry in the morning for breakfast, but it is so important to kick start your bodies metabolism, so what I found fantastic is "Up & go's" the liquid breakfast, really helps, quick, easy & great :)

It is really important to consume something within 30 minutes of waking in order to keep your metabolism going strong. A small 200-300 calorie meal (depending on your daily intake) is all you need. For many years I also often skipped breakfast or only ate in the mornings if I felt like it and have had to really adjust- but it has made a huge difference for me. I usually go for egg whites and a sprouted grain toast or a meal replacement shake so that I get a good mix of protein and low glycemic carbs.

I like to eat first thing in the morning because I'm hypoglycemic and will get dizzy, have hearing loss, all kinds of things unless I gobble up at least a piece of fruit quick.

However, if you don't have problems and really don't care much for breakfast you totally could see if that intermittent fasting business is for you. I'm jealous of people who can do it, since it seems to have so many interesting health benefits. My understanding of it is that they don't break the night fast (breakfast) until later on in the day, some as early as 5 o clock, some later.

Eating breakfast does nothing for your metabolism.

    If you aren't hungry - don't eat!

the reason why you are not hungry in the morning is because throughout the night your body used up all its source of nutrients and thus went into a catabolic state. in this state your body breaks down your own body (muscles among other things) and uses them to keep your body alive. also as a survival mechanism your metabolism slows to a halt when in this state. it is crucial that you get your body out of this state as soon as possible otherwise your body will sabotage your goals! best way to stop this is by eating a good and balanced meal of carbs protein and a little fat for breakfast within the hour of waking up. this will kick start your metabolism and stop your body from eating itself thus allowing you to burn the things you don't want like fat and calories!

I never used to, but I started making myself eat a little with my morning coffee and now I'm hungry within half an hour of waking.

agreed that breakfast does little or nothing to boost or jump start your metabolism, however i find that with breakfast i have more energy in the mornings, and when i first started loosing weight, it helped keep me from being super hungry come coffee break or lunch time.

a few mornings ago i had one of the best cardio work outs in recent memory on an empty stomach, save for coffee and last nights dinner, so what ever works.

Plenty of people on here have success without eating breakfast.

They eat all their calories in an 8 hr window between say 12pm to 8pm, or 2pm and 10pm.

It's called intermittent fasting - do a search and you'll find plenty of threads.

I could never do it as I wake up ravenous, but it works for many.

this is wrong on so many levels. breakfast is CRUCiAL for your metabolism. do you know WHY your not hungry? because your metabolism has slowed to a halt. WHY? because if it kept on going then your body would eat itself to death. it is a survival mechanism by your body to slow your metabolism so you don't die and the reason why its doing that is because you have no nutrients that your body can feed on. in other words FOOD. to stop this from happening you need to eat very soon after you wake up. in other words BREAKFAST!!

i hardly ever ate breakfast as a kid and most of my adult life too...never felt hungry first thing in the morning.
but, over the last 6months or more i have forced myself to have breakfast to see if it helped with my late afternoon/evening binges! but with no success...i have recently (last few days) gone back to eating around mid-morning when i do feel hungry...otherwise i tend to be fixated on food all day.

    LMAO.
Ohh so thats why I can eat over 2000 calories a day to lose weight? Man my metabolism sure seems dead.
You have to go without food for DAYS to actually slow metabolism and start muscle catabolism.

  • I get super tired, and super snacky and picky later on in the day, if I skip breakfast.

I never feel hungry first thing in the morning - at the most i'll have a small bowl of cereal, but its typically a slice of toast or a cereal bar.

ANYTHING just get you started in the day.

make it a habit and you'll thank yourself for it.

Consistent fasting is one thing, but skipping breakfast is another. The reason why they say breakfast jump starts your metabolism is because eating causes thermogenesis. It really doesn't matter in the long run, since your daily BMR pretty much stays the same. It may be a bit lower while sleeping, but when you wake up it does bump up a bit. :)

I mean, I eat a zillion meals a day, but that's only one way to health. There are others!

Dr. Oz told me that eating first thing in the morning is good for my metabolism. I believe him because he's on TV and wears scrubs.
  • I have that same problem. I usually grab a Zone Nutrition Bar for my breakfast... or occasionally a bagel if I am a little hungry. Usually I'll hit the gym after that, and i'll have an appetite by the time I'm done for a snack and/or a big lunch!
  • I work night shifts so my day is backwards from "the norm".

I usually have 2 meals a day and then 2 snack. Usually mid shift I will have a snack (2-3am) at the end of my shift (6-7am) I will eat my first meal....2 tablespoons of peanut butter, or a cereal bar and some fruit. I wake up around 4pm and have my 2nd meal (a regular dinner meal) and then around 10-11pm I will have my 2nd snack.

I will always eat "breakfast" whether I am hungry or not due to my sleeping all day and not eating till late afternoon. Even if I just have a glass of milk...I try to get at least 300-400 calories in before bed and I eat the rest later in the day.

If I miss breakfast I can go most of the day without eating but this just isn't healthy.

I eat a small breakfast as soon as I wake up, usually wholegrain toast. Your breakfast doesn't need to be a large meal, why not try an apple on your way to work. Not time consuming, cheap, healthy and won't make you bloated.

If I do miss breakfast I tend to make poorer choices food wise.

So because I ate a meal late at night last night and am not hungry now, my metabolism slowed to a halt digesting the food during my sleep and I need to eat in order to wake it back up? Uh no.

Eat when your hungry and don't eat when your not.. That 5/6 meal day a bull and must always eat breakfast doesn't work for everyone. there have been days when I legit will eat a light breakfast, a thousand calories at lunch and then barely anything at dinner and I'm losing weight just fine.. Must be a freak of nature I guess.
  • I'm usually not hungry in the mornings as well, but I forced down a fiber one and a couple cups of water. Helps digest my supplements.

Eat. Something small, maybe a hard boiled egg and then again a couple hours later. Your body needs to know it is going to get food on a consistent basis so it doesn't go into starvation-mode, whether your stomach says it's hungry or not. Several small meals way better for you than 1 or 2 big ones!

By eating a breakfast you can balance out your sugar levels through out the day and feel better, less tired. It has also been a proven fact that you tend to eat less through out the day.

I used to not eat breakfast at all and not eat much until noon or later. I had read that to help lose weight that you should be eating something for breakfast. It may not work for everyone, but I didn't really begin to lose weight until after I started to eat something in the morning (and I had been eating pretty good and exercising beforehand). I usually just have 1/2 bagel with either jam or spreadable butter (low fat)

I used to find that I wasn't hungry in the morning either. I don't believe in eating at certain times to lose weight, however, I found that I don't eat after 8 pm, I will be hungry in the morning, then I can eat something for breakfast.
