Most people have a sweet tooth and look for healthier options to satisfy those cravings,,,,
How about for those of us who crave salty things?? Anyone have ideas that aren't extremely high in sodium but can hit the spot??
I use Braggs Liquid Aminos as a substitute for soy sauce.....but thats only good if I'm cooking a meal.
Any snack ideas??

Low Fat Popcorn, Mini rice cakes, Wheatable crackers and spicy hummus are my go to salty snacks.0

I miss salty snacks much more than I do sweet things. What I wouldn't give for a bag of classic (no baking, no healthy stuff) Lays potatoe chips or a bag of Cheetos! *sigh*
One thing I've found are Whole Foods Veggie Chips or Straws. I can't go crazy with them, but one serving (40 chips) is about 170 calories. I cut that in about half and have it with a sandwich or tuna for lunch. They're quite good and have just a little bit of salty taste. I think Sprouts market also has a version of these chips.0 -

I also have this same problem. Chips and I are best friends. The best thing you can do is find things that have natural sodium in them such as tomatoes and celery. Most of the time this helps me out. It also may be worth it to purchase some lightly salted things. Such as crackers and chips sometimes granola. I am not sure but this is what has been working for me. I will look up a couple of things and try to see what I can find.0 -
Kale chips. I made this strange, but tasty treat for the first time about a week ago. I just bought a giant bag of kale this morning- can't get enough! They are crunchy, but melt in your mouth. They taste a little like pumpkin seeds. Last night, I added white wine vinegar and sea salt. Delicious! The only issue is that they get stuck in your teeth, so be sure to check a mirror before you go smiling at people.
Here's a recipe... http://www.katheats.com/favorite-foods/kale-chips0 -
It's not for everyone, but if you like asian snacks (or sushi) they're great. I snack on seaweed snacks when I have a salty craving. The ones from trader joes are 60 calories and 2g carbs per package. They come in wasabi flavor as well.

And if no trader's, annie chung makes them too:

These keep me away from the potato chips. ^_^0 -
I love the Quaker Mini Rice Snacks in the Salt and Pepper flavor. If I recall correctly, they're 130 calories for a portion (which is 16 pieces). I do not know the sodium content.0

I forgot about rice crackers. They are usually lower in sodium and most are between 0 and 1 grams of fat.0

Special K Cracker crisps!! 27chips=110 calories
Quaker quakes mini rice cakes cheddar cheese flavor is good! Taste like cheetos! 18=140 calories0 -
Also, Kim's Magic Pop. I bought the cinnamon flavor kind. I think I'll try it with some unsweetened apple sauce.

I like to eat Granny Smith apples in the place of the chips I used to eat. Granny Smith apples are more tart than sweet and have a great crispy crunch. Helps with the desire to salty crunchy things.0

my go to salty treats are seaweed wraps or lightly salted dry roasted edamame0

veggie sraws!0

What's wrong with high sodium unless you're sodium sensitive?0

Cheddar rice cakes and Reduced Fat Wheat Thins are my favorites!
Also, dried apple chips aren't salty but seem to satisfy the same craving.0 -
Keep them coming folks!! These are some great ideas!! I already do the Trader Joe's seaweed and I buy Blue Diamond Lightly salted Almond Rice crackers (and I get to eat them when my daughter hasn't munched them all LOL)....but that gets boring pretty quick.
A friend at the gym suggested I try dry oven roasting canned chickpeas with some spices....going to give this one a try too!!What's wrong with high sodium unless you're sodium sensitive?
While I'm not super sensitive to sodium I wanted to put that in the original post since many MFP'ers watch their sodium intake....0 -
Pistachios or peanuts, provided you're not allergic to either one. I find they satisfy both my crunchy and salty cravings.0

Steamed edamame with sea salt
Carrots dipped in hummus
Add a sprinkle of fresh grated parmesan on steamed veggies like broccoli
Dill pickle
Cucumber or tomato with some sea salt
It's okay to eat salt, if you are craving it your body might need some. Just eat it in moderation and try to combine to eat something semi-healthy. I've also found that having something crunchy seems to help when I want something salty...maybe it's the association with salt = chips.0 -
I eat lightly salted cashews ,apple slices or cantaloupe with a little sea or kosher salt. If you drink try sea salt and shot of tequilla in place of a beer or glass of wine.
To AeolianHarp, My reasons are i'm trying to eat more heart healthy since i've had 1 attack. It's been a blessing since i now pay attention to what i eat. I have been amazed at the amount of sodium in the average Americans diet, it is obscene! I'm not even going to go into the other crap in our food and some of the stuff they recommend.0 -

Oh yeah- great minds think alike these are my two most favorite salty snacks!!
Also, check out the Guiltless Gourmet brand of tortilla chips and Green Mountain Gringo salsa- both VERY tasty but much lower in sodium that most other brands.:flowerforyou:0 -
I don't monitor my sodium intake, but salty foods usually make me want more and more.
A little roquefort or other blue cheese is pretty good, as the strong taste means you only need a teeny bit to satisfy your craving (I add 5g to a salad or piece of ham)
I'm assuming anchovies are high in sodium, but they also kill my craving instantly.
Oh, and jarred green olives. 5-10 of these and I'm satisfied.0
