Need advice on how to tone

OK, I have lost the weight I wanted or rather needed to lose, and then some, I am able to fit into my daughters skinny jeans without a trace of muffin top, but I am 45, had three kids and was overweight for about ten years, I would like to get my body out this summer, show it off, but I need to tone, I have a small set of three different weights, and although I have generally waved them about, there is no real structure to what I do and don't feel I am achieving anything. I don't want a six pack, and I don't have a lot of loose skin, I am lucky that my boobs have not sagged or gone too far south and as they are pretty hefty am surprised and quite pleased, but I need someone to take me in hand, show me the way to do it, I would feel totally intimidated by the gym, and so don't please say go there and someone will show me...I would feel worried that they would take one look at me and laugh...

So people who know....please give me guidance for a total novice

I'd explore YouTube for some ideas - that way you can see exactly what you should be doing, as it's very difficult to just describe exercises.

Start with 2 sets of 20 each squats and press-ups!

If you want to start lifting weight, then get your butt to the gym, ask someone and stop complaining that they would laugh at you.

All of us had to start some where.. and a lot of us(my self included) went to a personal trainer to learn proper form. Videos are great and all but there is nothing like having someone actually standing there, watching you and correcting you. I know when I squat, I tend to not go down far enough and my knees come in... my trainer stands in front/side/back of me, and watches as I do it and says oh I noticed XYZ.. here's what we are going to do to correct it. That way I'm not injured for one and for two when I lift on my own, I know what I'm doing.

Thank you Melaniecheeks, one of my friends said the exact same thing and I didn't even think of you tube until then, so great idea.

Dad106, actually you have no idea how hard it would be for me to go to a gym, my ex was a body builder, I have huge issues with self confidence because of things that I have no wish to share here, I just asked for advice, I was not complaining.

I can't afford a personal trainer, gym membership is probably out of my reach even if I could feel confident enough to go.

    Firstly, you look A-MA-ZING!!

Secondly, You Tube is a great idea, or the fitness DVDs that are bandies around a lot on here like 30 Day Shred - great for building strength with only your own body weight and some light dumbells (don't underestimate it!)

Otherwise, push ups, sit ups, planks etc???
