Shaming myself to success

Every time I lose a little weight I 'treat' myself to something yummy then then it all goes wrong and I'm left gazing at the scales in annoyance of my own stupidity yet again! So I will post my weight, good or bad, once a week for all to see in the hope of shaming myself into staying on track. I'll admit all slips up and celebrate all wins with complete honesty (gulp!). Would love to hear how everyone else gets on so please post your stats too. x

It sounds like you are weighing yourself too often. Try going to once per week.
The objective is to make long term changes that will improve your health. These "rewards" you give yourself might be short term over the long term reward of hitting your target weight and body shape.
I'm not sure what you have but let's say it's chocolate. This was my big thing. I cut it out and went cold turkey since 2nd January.
Make your treat something healthy or even non-food related.0 -
Thanks for the advice Larkiedeek. My treat is usually a take away, Chinese being my vice (why can't I just be addicted to celery!). I agree that going cold turkey is the way forward but time will tell if that's sustainable I guess. I also need to drink more water to flush out the fat. I'm just going to get through one day at a time, that way it won't all seem like such a big and daunting task. x0

I don't think shaming yourself is a good way to go, especially long term. Most posters on here would be supportive, but there are always going to be d-bags on here that will not hesitate to be cruel, and there might be times they get the better of you & it's tough enough to lose weight with positive support, so the unnecessary negativity from strangers is something I would urge you to avoid.
I have to disagree about going cold turkey, because that rarely works well. Just ask any smokers who've tried to quit that way. IMHO, you need to have plans on what to eat at the restaurants you frequent most. I try to have 3-4 healthier choices that are still something you enjoy to eat. For example, when we go to the Japanese place in the mall, I'll get one order of Teriyaki chicken with extra meat, but I'll share it with my daughter, so it's only half of what I would usually eat.
If you try & go cold turkey on everything you enjoy eating, it'll be tough to have sustainable success.0 -
Why do you treat youself to something yummy only when you've lost a little weight? Why not have a day of the week (or month) when you can eat chinese food or chocolate or whatever it is that you want? This way you don't overindulge when you get it and you don't feel guilty afterwards. Just get back into your normal routine the next day. Or just add in some extra cardio on your treat days.
Or maybe try something different when you lose weight. My thing is a new pair of shoes for every 10lbs lost. And since my goal is around 60lbs, that's gonig to be 6 new pairs of shoes!!0 -
JBAppleby - Firstly 24lbs!!! That's amazing, well done. The d-bags are kind of part of the idea. In order to avoid being made to feel like poop I'm going to have to really put the effort in, If people are cruel when I've lost 4-5lbs in a week I'll know that's because they're idiots not because I've actually done badly but if I haven't put the effort in then I want someone to kick my behind on it. I'm not sure the cold turkey thing is sustainable either. In theory it's obviously the quickest route taking just calories into account but whether my mind and will power will follow is another thing! I'm very aware that a small treat every now and then may keep me on the wagon but would like to think I can overcome the takeaways completely, at least until I am at my target weight. We'll see I guess, nothing is set in stone for me, I'll adapt my ideas as needed. As far as going out to eat, most of my friends are sushi lovers so that's not so bad. x0

Itsmaymee - I've been treating myself to something yummy after only a little loss because I've been an idiot! I let the take away menu get the better of me and use the small weight loss to justify it - so silly, I know. I need to work out if I am the sort of person who can have a treat every now and them without going OTT so I may well look at your idea of a treat day once a month but lets see if I can get through a month first!
I love your idea about the shoes although I don't have too much will power with shopping either (hmmmm starting to see a theme here). Perhaps I'll try rewarding myself with spa days instead.
Well done on losing 7lbs, keep up the good work. x0 -
Have you thought of treating yourself to non-food rewards when you do well on the scale? i buy a new piece of fitness clothing or more music for my iPod or maybe even a heart rate monitor? Even better, when you start to lose weight, you can treat yourself to the new clothes you'll need because the old ones won't fit anymore. Hang in there!0
-
Bjfrezell - You're right! I will need new clothes! (as if I needed an excuse ). With so many cute summer dresses hitting the shops that's some pretty good motivation. Well done on the 26lbs! That's brilliant!0

Shaming yourself is self destructive and in the long run, not a good thing. It can cause stress .... stress can make you lose more slowly. Learn to love yourself now .... tell yourself everyday that you are worth it, even if at first you don't believe it. Be good to yourself, because you deserve it
I agree with others, if you want a reward, make it a non-food one.
Little sign I found that I thought was cute below:

Shame is not a good motivator. We don't continue doing things that make us feel bad. If you associate losing weight with shame (particularly public shame) and disappointment, you're going to quit eventually. That's not anything bad or wrong about you, but it's just how our brains work; even animals respond better to positive reinforcement than negative. Celebrate your successes; acknowledge but don't dwell on your struggles.0

Another 2.6lbs lost!
New weight 141lbs0 -
well it seems to be working for you0

reqwarding your success with food is like rewarding yourself for getting to the last mile marker in a marathon and celebrating by turning around and running the other way.
Good luck.0 -
Another 2.3lbs lost. :-)
New weight 138.7lbs! So pleased to be out of the 140's! x0 -
Oh dear! Not sure what happened last week but I only lost 0.6lbs :-( I haven't done anything different! Hopefully just a random blip. If the same thing happens this week then I'll try changing my exercise routine and see if that helps.

Just remember : NOTHING TASTE BETTER THEN SKINNY trust me 10 years ago I weighed 100 lbs heavier then right now and to stay that way i have learned to only treat myself on special occasions that way i never feel guilty and everyday i can look in the mirror and be proud that i have kept the weight off. That being said I never seem happy with my weight i meet my goal then i set a new goal but i am healthy i work out daily and i'm happy . but there is something magical in fitting into a size 0 or 2 pair of jeans trust me no chocolate gives me the same kind of rush LOL Good luck0
