My feet go numb when working out

I also have that same problem, have for years when I'm on those same machines. I just try to wiggle my toes and change my direciton on the machine. I find that helps. I know my shoes are the right size so it can't be that and I don't tie them too tight.

I have the same problem as well. My feel usually start to go numb after about 20 minutes or so. I will be watching the answers as well on this.0

It could be your laces. A friend of mine recommended these -- not only do you not have to tie your shoes or worry about them becoming untied, they give with your foot and actually help the shoe wrap around and form to your foot better. You can pick them up at your local running store or check them out here:

Here is the company website the explains them in a little more detail:

I used to have a problem with my feet going numb while on the elliptical. I tried different shoes. My feet were still numb.
Then somewhere, possibly on here, I read that someone had tried stretching their hamstrings before working on cardio. That seemed silly to me. But I tried it. Now my feet don't get numb any more.0 -
You have alot of good ideas here, my feet burn after about a half hour of running or the eliptical....I just know that I am really pushing my body then....
Good Luck!0 -
I had this same problem. Thought my bunions were pushing on my other toes and causing all the numbness. Went to Pediotrist. NOPE!!! Inserts are the answer. Since I got my inserts, no problems. Not gels, but inserts. There are a number of places to find them. I know some Wal-Mart stores has the machine to measure your feet. I got my at the New Feet Store. Good Luck.0

this happens to me. roll some tennis balls under your feel - helps to stretch them. buy bigger shoes... they felt to big for me... but have made a big difference. still happens on long runs so I have stuck to shorter intervals.0

Happens to me on the elliptical only after I have been on it about 45 minutes or when I go up to the biggest stride, but also happens when I go for long walks. Usually if I just stand up on my toes for a bit it get the blood back to them. It used to happen more often and more early on when I wore cheap shoes, but only rarely in my Swiss K tubes.0

Looks like it is pretty common....Happens to me sometimes when I run, but doesn't kick in until I've gone a couple miles. I changed shoe brands and it stopped.0

This always happens to me, only on the elliptical though. I alleviate it by frequently picking up my feet with my strides.0

Your laces are too tight
yup...happens to me too, until i didn't tie my laces so tight...and wear good cotton socks0 -
I had it happen to me as well, with running or especially with the elliptical. It would start with my toes and then the balls of my feet, eventually being quite painful. Turns out I have a very common condition referred to as Morton's Neuroma - where the nerve between your third and fourth toe is inflamed and swollen, causing numbness or pain. I traded out shoes, laces, etc. None of it worked because the problem wasn't the shoes, but the pressure on the ball of my foot/toe (I'm a total Tigger runner, so tend to put a lot more weight on my toes than my heels).
I had it checked by a podiatrist and may need surgery on it, but that's not always the case. Google it, and see if the symptoms fit. I sure hope it's the laces or shoes, though!0 -
Mine go numb even when I'm just walking! To exercise I use a cycle, I've ridden this in flip flops and still my toes go numb. Spoken to my doctor who sent me for tests and he say's there's nothing wrong so I guess I'll just have to persevere with it for now.0

Looks like it is the form while on the machine. I have the same problem and will try these suggestions tonight!0 -
Happens to me too, all of the time. My shoes are cloth, and slip on/off easily without me touching the laces. I'm pretty sure it's the way we're resting our feet on the elliptical that makes them go numb. I try to shuffle my feet more and move my toes a lot to make sure they don't get too numb.0

This happened to me too... No matter what shoes I wear even if the laces are totally undone or not, it happened every time I work out. REALLY frustrating. looking for answers too!!!!!0

I have same problem usually my right foot. I was told by chiropractor that it was sciatica. I did have problems while driving pain was so bad and went down from my bottom to behind my knee. So maybe that is the issue. I will try stretching more and see if it helps. Thanks everyone for sharing.0

I recently posted about this same problem. Another suggestion I got was to occasionally reverse direction. I think that helps by transferring your weight to your heels.0
