does such a thing exist????

I am looking for something I can wear while running that will calculate the distance I am running, the rate in MPH (or KM/hr), as well as a report at the end of the run that can track where I slowed down (basically a report of the run).

Does such a thing exist?

What kind of phone do you have? If it has a GPS, you can use something like runkeeper, or smartrunner apps to track your runs. If that doesn't give you enough detail, then you can always buy a GPS tracker that will do the same thing, but they cost over $100.

I do not have an android or iphone, and do not plan on getting one. I'm looking for a device that will be specifically for running? My ipod has a pedometer, but I don't care how many steps I've taken.

    excuse me then

I think a few years back Nike made a pair of shoes that had such a thing built into them. I never paid to much attention to them at the time but it's worth doing a search for them.

Doing a google search came up with this. Hope it helps

If you don't want to spend $300-$400 on a GPS tracking heart rate monitor, this may do the trick.

If you get the optional foot pod, it will track your speed and distance.
  • Nike, Polar, Garmin, Timex Ironman and Suunto all make versions of this. They are pretty steep though so be prepared to drop some dough if you want precise data. The Nike version is probably the cheapest but you will need to track through their site or app to see where you slowed down and get a holder for the pod to attach to the top of your shoe if you do not run in Nikes (which have a space to put the pod). Garmin is probably the most popular among avid runners.

Yes. I have a GPS watch from Garmin, and there are other brands as well. They make models with different features (and prices). My Forerunner 205 (somewhere between $150 and $200, I think) doesn't do heart rate or cycling cadence, but it does track time, distance, speed, elevation, etc, and can be used for running, cycling or other sports. It comes with software for your PC or Mac that you can upload your run data into. I've had mine about 1 1/2 years and have been pleased with it.

I started out using the Nike+ with my iPod Nano a couple of years ago, before I got my Garmin. I never felt like the Nike+ was accurate--if I ran much faster or slower than the speed I had calibrated it at, the distance would be off significantly. It might work better with the newer iPod Touch or iPhone models, though.

No, I don't think you really need a decent tracker that is going to monitor you within inches or provide elevation or mapping. As a few people noted, Nike+ seems like the answer for you since you already have an iPod. It works just fine for what you're looking for (in fact it does exactly what you're looking for), and it's accurate enough for what you're looking for and willing to spend. Just get the Nike+ Pill and a holder for whatever shoes you use; don't buy special Nike shoes.

    Get this: http://www.amazon.com/Nike-Stand-Alone-Sensor-Kit/dp/B001L6LJJS/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1334516729&sr=8-2

    and something like this: http://www.amazon.com/Marware-Sportsuit-Sensor-Sport-Black/dp/B000ID6DTG/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1334516729&sr=8-3

You should be able to get the pair for around $25. Probably a lot less on Ebay or Craigslist. Good luck!

thaniks everyone!! Seems like a decent garmin or gps tracker costs more than just caving and getting an iphone, then downloading the app. :(
That's why most people use smartphones. Which doesn't necessarily mean paying apple a fortune for an iphone.

The trend is definitely towards having one single multi-function smartphone, instead of having individual items such as ipods and trackers. Obviously a dedicated piece of equipment will be superior on some ways, but for most people the convenience of a smart phone overrides this.

EDIT: I'm not familiar with Nike plus thing, but if it does what you want for $25, go for it!
It might only tell you "when" you slowed down though, not where....

You can go a cheaper route with an android phone. The apps are available for android as well, which you should be able to get a descent phone for little to no cost, if you just want something that has the capability.

A decent lower-end Garmin, without the heart rate monitor or some of the other bells and whistles, should run in the $150 to $200 range. Unlike a smartphone or iPod, GPS watches are made to withstand sweat, and you can even swim in some of them.
