Hi there,

I work nights as a care assistant in a nursing home for dementia patients, I work 8pm to 8am and am wondering how I should go about completing my food diary when I am on a night shift?

Anyone in a similar situation?

I work 7P-7A and end my diary days at 12 am. I do this bc on my days off I keep to a regular day schedule. My meal times are pushed around a little to account for the nights I work. See below a previous thread I replied to.

    "Sunday-

Breakfast is later, around 10 am, as I try to sleep in to help me throughout the day and night.
    Snack 1-2 pm
    Lunch 5:30 pm
    Work starts 7 pm
    Snack 8:30 pm
    Dinner between 10-11 pm
    That ends my Sunday eating.

I hold off on breakfast till around 4 am at work bc it gets me through my workout around 7:30-8 am. I have a snack on my way home and then sleep and start over. If I'm not working the following night; I do a normal day schedule. "

I work off shifts and usually just enter my food like i normally would my meals may look weird but it works so my first meal is breakfast even if i am working nights and entering it at 7p etc

Thabk you so much both great responses xx
  • I used to do night shift too, so I know how that goes. If having your daily food split across two different "diary days" bugs you, try changing your time zone to somewhere halfway across the world and use as normal remembering that am and pm are now flipped on the site.

i wake up at different times each day. if i wake up at 3 pm on say thursday, but don't go to bed until 6am on friday, all food i log will go on thursday, even if i eat it after midnight.

I work 3:30-midnight but am up from 10am to 2/3am, check out my diary! I have it setup for time periods not meals because it gets kind of confusing lol If I wake up at 10 anything i eat from then until i got to bed gets tracked in one day even after midnight or 1. I dont worry about eating "too late" since calories cant tell time :P

I do not work over midnight... but there is a girl that I am friends with that does and she changed her diary to be time-frames instead of Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Snacks.

So she has 0900-1100; 1100-1800, etc.

    That might work for you.

I do work 2nd shift, which means I work 3pm-11pm and I log all my food in the same day until I go to sleep. When I wake up it is a new day. But I get up early and try to go to sleep immediately when I get home, so usually I am not eating past midnight. Of course, there are those days when I don't get home until 11:45 and with all that needs to be done it is after midnight before I am ready to head to bed -- but I want a snack. I will have the snack and it goes on the previous "day".

In "settings" on the home page, you can change your diary settings, adding descriptors that are more useful to you (as opposed to "Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner/Snack"). For example, you could change it to foods consumed night/post midnight/etc. Might make it more pertinent to you.
