Hello Everyone!
Just wanted to know if people think this is right or not. I've just been for a 5K run using my new heart rate monitor (Oregon SE122). I've entered my age, 23, weight, 60kg and sex, female into the monitor. My run consited of flat roads, a steady down hill and a steap uphill. My heart rate started off at about 180bpm and averaged out to 188bpm. While i was running up the steap hill my heart rate increased to about 195-205 for about 2-3mins. the runIt took me 25mins. At the end of the run, my monitor showed i burnt 600 calories. Is that right?! It seems far to high. I was expecting it to be about 300 ish? Do i trust it or not? Any help would be great.
 :indifferent:

that sounds way too high to me. People generally burn 90-110 calories per mile running. You would get a 600 calorie burn around 6 miles or so.....0

My HRM (Polar FT4) gives me similar results, I've wondered the same thing.0

My polar ft4 gave me 932 cals on yesterdays 8.6k run which took me 1hr 15 min av HR 135 max HR 156 im 49 yrs0

I entered your stats into an equation I found and it shows you burned 345 calories. Here's the equation for future reference (females only):
Calculate the calories burned if you're female. This is given by the equation:
= (0.074 x age in years - 0.05741 x weight in pounds + 0.4472 x average heart rate - 20.4022) x time elapsed / 4.184.
For an example calculation, a 43-year-old female weighing 143 pounds exercised for 45 minutes with an average heart rate during the session of 141 bpm:
(0.074 x 43 - 0.05741 x 143 + 0.4472 x 141 - 20.4022) x 45 / 4.184 = 405 calories during your exercise session.0 -

Try this:

My Garmin 305 clocks me at 147 cals/mile @ 185 pounds.
The RW formula yields 139 for that weight.0 -
Bump. Interesting equation. I'll have to try that next time I go for a run to see how accurate my HRM is. Thanks!0

Keep in mind that if you are on any medication that alters your heart rate that will affect the calories that your HRM says you burn.0
-
At a heart rate of 170 bpm, or 89% of your maximum heart rate (192 bpm), your calorie burn is an estimated 713 calories per hour. In 25 minutes, you will burn approximately 297 calories.
Cheers

Cheers guys! You've been a great help :-)
Based on all that, i'm guessing I shouldn't rely on my HRM then. I wonder why it's so wildly out...humm...?
Bizco, the equation looks good, I will give that a go from now on
ATT949, Thanks for the link!

Bizco, just out of interest, where did you get the equation from? x0
