It may be that you are not breathing. Also you may be holding your mouth open and only breathing through it. Practice inhaling through your nose and exhaling out of your mouth.

    Couple suggestions for this:

Bring a water bottle. If you are in a dryer climate than you are used to this could happen.
Chew gum while you run (I met an olympic marathon runner that did this)
Try checking your breathing. Make up a pattern that works and keep doing this.

    Hope this helps.

that happens to me when its cold out! trryyyyyyyy to breathe through your nose
    try running indoors
that thing about dry climate is probably true, and similar to the running when its cold

If you are new to running, I would suggest something like a program called Couch to 5K. Shoot, I should have kept that link. I will look for it and give it to you. I have actually been doing it, since I am not a runner. (yet)
I use to have the same problem, but with this program it is a great help to get into running/jogging slowly, escpecially if you are not in shape yet.
I will try to find that site and send it to you. Good luck.
  • Breathe in through your nose and exhale deeply out you mouth. I am a runner and when i first started this felt weird but it works for a number of things. Also, take a sip of water every few minutes. Hope that helps

I had this happen and it's normal. Your new at it and your body is adjusting, slow down and as long as your able to talk your pace is okay. I started running in January and could only go 3 minutes now I am at 54 minutes and I can talk quite a bit as well. You can do it and just remember... slow down and it's all good! Godo luck and keep going, your body will adjust!

    I had the same problem.
    Tried the gum.
Thought I'd choke on it
    Haven't yet! *knock on wood*

The gum does the trick to keep up my saliva production and keep my throat and nasal passages from drying out.
  • thanx everyone this info help a lot!!! i will try all this today when i go for a run!:smile:

My other question to all you runners is..how long does it take to start being able to run longer...i just feel horrible when i can only run for 10-15 mins and im pooped...makes me feel like i didnt even get a work out...
friends at work told me to just try speed walking at first on the treadmill...but i dont want to because it doesnt feel like that works as well as running..

I run intervals. I run a little, walk a little, run a little, walk a little. I've built up my run time that way.

Here is the site I was talking about earlier. Scroll down to the bottom and it will break it down for you to get you into running/jogging. I hope this helps.

Like Lauryn said intervals. When you are tired just walk until you catch your breath then try running again.

For me it looks like jog 12 minutes walk 2 Jog 4 minutes walk 2 etc

I run intervals. I run a little, walk a little, run a little, walk a little. I've built up my run time that way.
