Thats a tough one, I was surprised when i saw how many calories are in sushi. I ate sushi non-stop for years, and I have since lost my taste for it. Hopefully someone on here an help you out.

Nigiri and the rolls that only have raw fish. Avoid any tempura rolls. Enjoy it. I have sushi at least once a week. I love it!

Don't know, tough call. I love sushi and have the same issue. I try to minimize the rolls that have mayo and cream cheese in them, as well as any of them that have tempura or anything fried. I try to stick to the rolls with tuna, salmon, or white fish on the outside and inside with maybe avocado. The crunch / candy cane rolls are actually pretty bad if I understand that right. But they're oh so good. LOL

Avoid deep fried rolls. Avoid any mayo sauce on top. California rolls and sashimi are great options (kinda boring, I know). I always try to substitute some bad rolls for tuna/avacado rolls or sashimi. The best part of sushi is trying new, exciting rolls, so don't feel bad for getting a good one!

I know I am terrible, but I would say just enjoy it! I agree with skipping the Tempura rolls, but unless you're going to be eating it every day I would just enjoy the treat!
  • I like rainbow rolls - around 500 calories per roll. Different types of raw fish on top of a california roll basically.

I LOVE sushi and cannot live without it but had to learn to enjoy it in moderation and not weekly as I used to.

Don't forget to include the soy sauce, that's what gets you!

Ah, finally something I've done great research on. Stay away from anything "Fried, Tempura, Cream Cheese, Spicy". Staying with veggie rolls for the least calories. Wasabi isn't as bad as Spicy Mayo if you like it Spicy. Soy Sauce is very sodium packed, use it sparingly. If you are going somewhere that will make it with brown rice that is a better choice. Even though Avocado is good for you (good fat) it's still high in calories, so if you have a lot to use, then go for it. Otherwise, stay away from it. Eel is fatty too.

I've found that any of them that don't have tempura is just fine.

But seriously? Just eat sushi. Because it's delicious and wonderful and makes your insides have a party. Also tempura is sooooooooo goooooooooood.

    Dragon Rolls ftw.

I will eat eel forever. omg. so good. #sogood

    Nothing fried.

Go for individual pieces instead of rolls.

Usually the plain Maki rolls or Real Sushi, which is just the fish. You start adding crunchies and spicy sauce (mayonnaise) and the calories start to pile up. Stay with the plain rolls and you can usually eat 2 for under 600 cals.

http://www.sushifaq.com/sushi-health/calories-in-sushi/ as someone mentioned above is a good site,

Soy sauce doesn't add many calories, but if you have sodium concerns, it's loaded; therefore, it makes you retain water, thus adding some water weight for a day or so.

If you want to keep it low cal then the decision to go sashimi and nigiri are easily your best option.

But, let's be honest now. Do you want to go out for sushi and don't have an awesome spicy tuna roll? or a tempura roll? It's one night. If you keep your cals low throughout the day, you'll be fine. Just throwing out that option there. Go out, enjoy yourself, and employ hara hachi bu: eat until you're 80% full.
  • I love miso soup and it helps to fill you up.

I love sushi and refuse to give it up! :-) Last time I ate it I went with a salmon roll, just salmon and rice, for 210 cals and also a Boston Roll which has crab and shrimp and a little mayo for 210 cals. I pigged out that day and got some pepper tuna sashimi, which was 200+ but it was sooo good!!! If I know I'm having sushi, I usually eat very light for breakfast and dinner and indulge for sushi at lunchtime :-)

In addition to avoiding the fried "tempura" rolls, you should also try to avoid sushi rolls that have cream cheese, both types can have high calories, fats, etc.

+1 on this. The rice contains rice vinegar, sugar and salt, which makes the rice a lot less healthy than most people think. Miso -could- be a good option, but the sodium content in that is incredibly high because of the miso paste. If you're not concerned about sodium, then it should be fine. Avoid all rolls if you are that concerned, but I would personally just budget it into your calories for the day.

Wow some really great advice so far! Keep it coming. I also wanted to add that this place has hibachi (where they cook in front of you) any recommendations on that end as well would help.

I eat sushi a lot. My usual order consists of an order of tuna sashimi, an order of fresh salmon sashimi and a rainbow roll. Will come out around 600 - 650 cals, excellent protein, some carbs and good fat from the fish and avocado.

I'd be willing to bet it's a bit higher than 600-650.
Could be wrong, guess it depends on the place.

It's a little higher. I was going off memory. Rainbow roll will run around 500, 2 pieces of tuna around 80 and 2 pieces of salmon around 95. So, 675.

    This!!
sashimi has no rice, Chirashi is like a sushi bowl, rice is on the bottom so you can control how much of the rice you eat, and Nigiri has little rice, and you can always peel half the rice off. Plus good sushi places, they don't use a lot of rice so nigiri is totally fine, and honestly way better than most of those gooey Americanized rolls.
