Going to a sushi dinner tonight

I really like the salads that they offer at my favorite sushi place - basically a fancy salad with lots of sashimi (yellow tail, salmon, tuna, some caviar) mixed in. I LOVE sushi but am not a huge fan of rice, generally, so I usually tend towards the salads or the sashimi.0

I love getting the chirashi.
It is a bowl of rice with all the best pieces of sashimi on top of it. Salmon, tuna, whitefish, eel, etc. A good bit of pieces. Then you can eat as much or as little of the rice as you want and it generally runs around $18. I get that and some edamame and I am good.0 -
I only recently discovered a love for sushi, and I manage to have it every week without breaking my calorie bank. I agree with those that said avoid tempura, anything that says "spicy" and stick with sashimi to keep the carbs lower if that's what your after. Two pieces of tuna sashimi is only around 30 calories. One hand roll runs around 120 per piece, just two pieces of Philadelphia roll is 100 calories while four pieces of cucumber roll is about 160. Start with a salad or some miso soup, 40 calories for a cup and it helps you feel more full on less food. I typed in "sushi calories" on Google and go the MFP link below.

The 400 Calorie Fix book really helped me get a handle on eating out and not going crazy. I don't really do the 400 Calorie diet, but it is a great resource for learning to judge portion sizes and give you suggestions what to eat.0 -
I make my own at home and add, lowfat cream cheese, cucumber, avacado sometimes i mitation crab, raw tuna or salmon. I vary sometimes and add spring onion and maybe some wasabi.
Veggie rolls are not bad.
LOVE YOUR PROFILE PIC!!! LETS GO FLYERS!!!!0 -
Wow some really great advice so far! Keep it coming. I also wanted to add that this place has hibachi (where they cook in front of you) any recommendations on that end as well would help.
Ask them to cook your stuff with no oil and pass on the rice and you should be in good shape. Obviously, the chicken and shrimp are the ways to go to keep the calorie count down.0 -
Avoid deep fried rolls. Avoid any mayo sauce on top. California rolls and sashimi are great options (kinda boring, I know). I always try to substitute some bad rolls for tuna/avacado rolls or sashimi. The best part of sushi is trying new, exciting rolls, so don't feel bad for getting a good one!
This.
I am getting more into sushi. Ever since college. But I have to admit...I love the ones with cream cheese
But I usually only get one roll.0
