torn abdominal muscle

ok so I guess I over did it at the gym and now I have torn some abdominal muscles. This is very painful..hurts just to breathe. The healing process can be anywhere from a few weeks to a few months. Any suggestions on how to continue to burn calories/work out. I really dont want to gain weight due to this set back.

I would suggest rather than risking furthering your injury or making things worse, to consult with your PCP, a Sports MD in your area.... An injury in the core area can throw just about everything off....

First, ask a doctor which exercises are still ok to do. Or a good personal trainer or physical therapist. Now, with no experience or knowledge of this type of injury, here is my advice. Try low-impact and non-strenuous exercises that don't work your core. This may be difficult because there are a lot of exercises that work your core. This will probably mean taking a break from weights for a while. Try yoga or walking.

Really, give things a try, if they hurt, stop. It might be best to take this time just to heal, and experiment in the kitchen with low calorie recipes so you don't gain weight. Let this be a lesson on the dangers of over training.

I felt so good and strong that I thought I could push a little harder..guess I was wrong. My doc said to just rest. I have three very young kids and just taking care of them is painfull. I will do what you suggest and try to get creative with my foods. Looks like walking may be my only exercise for a while. Anything weight bearing is definately out. Anything to do with the core is out.

Oh this sounds truly horrible. Please be really gentle with yourself, and do take professional medical advice before doing *any* exercise.

talk to your doctor. talk to a physical therapist - were you assigned PT? don't worry too much about the work out; your body is working PLENTY hard healing. focus on diet and healing.

Sounds really painful! Get some expert advice and take it easy. A few warm baths and some light stretching may help.
