Is there a good Peanut butter substitute?

I love peanut butter, but it's so high in calories. Is there any kind that is lower? I have heard of the pb powder, but can you still use that on bread and pancakes? doesn't seem like you could. any suggestions?

You actually mix the powder with a bit of water and stir till smooth, then you can dip things in it, or spread it. My kids love both the regular PB and the chocolate PB.

one of the things about pb is it's healthy fats. If you wanted to cut out sugar you can get "natural" peanut butter which is basically just crushed peanuts without the additives and preservatives. It needs to be kept in the fridge and stirred before used, but it's a good alternative! :)

    Not that I'm aware of.
  • I get one from Trader Joes called "Better than Peanut Butter." It's like 80% less fat and it's not as sticky and salty as normal peanut butter, so it really does taste better, at least in my opinion :)

Better 'n Peanut Butter is AMAZING. It's what I use. You can find it at most Super Target stores, too.

Blech! (sorry) What do you use this in? I opened a jar and can't think of how to use it up. I really don't like the flavor, & the texture is "goopy." Better'n PB uses peanut flour ...... much less peanut flavor (IMO)

PB2 has great flavor ..... texture, not so much. I use PB2 in oatmeal, on toaster waffles, and as a dip for apples. Yummy!

I love PB2, the chocolate one is so yummy! Mix it with a little water to get to the consistency you like and then spread it on anything or use as a dip. I also add the powder to my smoothies.

Here's my question....I had been using Jif Natural Creamy PB and loving it, but wanted to try Better N' Peanut Butter (they had it at our Target) and I can't spready it! Any tips on how to use this stuff? I wanted it on a piece of toast and it tore the bread apart so bad that I had to throw it out and start over.
  • My grocery store's natural and bulk food section has a peanut butter grinder thing. I just push the button and get peanut butter that is nothing but nuts. They have plain, honey roasted, and almond. It is still high in calories, but it is good fats and protein and an excellent snack when I need something a little more substantial.

Oooh - I used Better'n Peanut Butter (once) at room temperature ..... now it's refrigerated .... thanks for the warning. Another really stiff peanut butter substitute is called Naturally More (Walmart has this) ..... not lower calorie, but added flax & fiber. Tastes good, but spreading on anything is really hard work.

    Almond butter?
  • I microwave it for 10-20 seconds before spreading it and it's perfect.

Peanut butter is high calorie due to it's healthy fats. If you remove the fats from it, you've pretty much removed the nutrition, so why bother eating it at all?

    For the flavor silly!

I haven't found anything suitable as a replacement. If you are using it for pancakes and the like I'm guessing PB2 would work to add the flavor.

Let me know if you find one. I confess to being scared to try anything other than the creamy Jif I've been eating forever. I did try almond butter and it's pretty good, but I wouldn't say it's a substitute for peanut butter, and I doubt it has fewer calories either.

Because it tastes delicious and not all of us have hundreds of spare calories sitting around. I could easily eat my weight in peanut butter. I also have the appetite of a 300 lb man and can't afford to use calories on 2 measly TB of peanut butter. So, my vote is for pb2 if you want to feel like you're sort of eating peanut butter but can't spare the calories for the real thing.
  • Today I found peanut butter spread made by Walden Farms, it is calorie free, fat free, and gluten/sugar free. I found it at Walmart..$3 for a 12 oz jar.
