Drill Sargent preference here. I need someone to push me past my limits. Pain is progress :)

I do both. I do really good at the "come on folks, looking good, we're all in this together." and then every once in a while I pull out the "lunge people! I said get down now!" and then I go back to "Woot! Woot! Yeah, look at you, you just got down there!!"

I'm really into push harder, faster, stronger, expand your comfort zone, and then standing there giving you that big old pat on the back for an awesome accomplishment.

I think I found a good middle ground with my trainer. His workouts push me pretty hard, but he always tells me to take a break if I need to. I find myself pushing harder and harder just to show him what I'm capable of doing. So far the results have been great!

Someone who knows how to balance. It's great to be encouraging, but sometimes you need to be told to get off your fat *kitten* and MOVE, dammit! You call that a squat, My grandma has better form than your pathetic 2" bend in the knees!

I need/like a combo of both! Sometimes I need pushed, sometimes I need to be told how good of a job I'm doing.

I respond well to drill instructor.
I try to be a cheerleader for others, until I know that drill instructor works best for them.

A bit of a mix. Growing up in Asia, we know that when an instructor tells you something, you just do it. You put your complete faith in him for the field you got him for. However, we also know that our instructors are very caring people.

Example, my coach will tell me to do something and then walk away because he expects me to finish but will come back and instead of screaming at me, he'll try to encourage me. He will never EVER reduce the reps or intensity asked by him originally because in his (and mine) mind thats a big defeat but his encouragement goes a long way.

definitely the cheerleader! My cycling instructor is so awesome, he gets in my head even when I'm swimming or running! It helps that he's hot...

I'm new at training others, but I am somewhere in between. It depends on the person, the situation & what they need at the moment. I swear, the hardest thing so far is keeping my mouth shut when I see other trainers not correcting someone's form at the gym!

Both... sometimes I need a drill Sargeant and sometimes I'd really just have the cheerleader XD

Drill instructor! I used to take spinning, on my first class the instructor came in and she was the sweetest person I've ever met..... then the music came on and she was mean! My butt started dipping low when i was standing on the pedals (hey i was tired!) and she yelled at me lol if she was a cheerleader i probably wouldn't have pushed myself so hard. I kept going back to her classes, I miss that gym :-(

I like the cheerleader style. I want someone as enthusiastic and spastic and encouraging and motivated as I am. Sometimes I get pre-workout jitters and it's nice to have someone be casual and cool... let me know that we're just gonna do some working out and it's all fine though it will be EPIC!

I love to be yelled at - makes me pissed and work out harder. Cheerleader makes me embarrassed for some reason - once I was riding my stationary bike in the morning and my husband just said "yeah, keep it up - you go girl" and I burst out crying from embarrassment. No idea why... he doesn't say anything anymore - I also never work out in-front of people because of embarrassment though and it's not that I am unfit. I would want someone who takes me seriously and will tell me what to do and doesn't feel the need to say I did a good job, until after we are done with the work out.

Yelling get's my adrenaline rushing and I will work out all day.

This thread has just reinforced the fact that I need to invest in a riding crop . . . WHACK!

Subdued cheerleader. Too peppy is off putting, but being yelled at just makes me want to eat a sundae to console myself. I need my workouts to be a little more positive.

My current trainer is a nice mix of both.. and knows when he clearly won't win that whole "come on only 3 more reps and then your done!" argument with me :)

My first trainer was very permissive and had no drill sergeant in him.. nor was he a cheerleader.

My second trainer was a drill sergeant but also a cheerleader when needed.. which I liked.
