How did people finish sentences before smiley faces were invented?

Exclamation marks are too shouty! But a kiss can be too familiar x

A full stop or nothing at all can sound sharp or rude.

But smiley faces just work :)

    i'm absolutely addicted to smiley faces! :)

    i love them.. they can convey a sense of humor, a cheeky reference, or just a nice smiley hug :)
