So I just got a MIO Motive HRM. I used it for the first time tonight. I did 15 minutes of weights and 60 minutes of turbo kick. My HRM said I burned 887 calories. This seems awfully high to me. What kind of burn do you get with your HRM's? I'm 38, 161 lbs, low activity and my resting heart rate is 58. Any opinions are welcome. Thanks

What is turbo kick? Like a dance zumba kind of thing? Then it is very possible. I don't do much cardio but I know i burn 500 calories in an hour of lifting. I also burn around 500 cals biking on my static bike for an hour at about 21mph on medium resistance.

For one, HRM's are not meant for weights... Only steady state cardio.

For two, I'm assuming from my google search that it does not have a chest strap.. which means it's inaccurate for calories burned.

My suggestion, return and get one with a chest strap.. preferably a Polar.

Turbo kick is kickboxing. What does the difference of a chest strap make? I don't know much about HRM's.

HRM's without a chest strap only get the heart rate when you touch the watch... So if you touch it once and it reads 90, it's going to base the calorie burn off that 90 until you touch it again.. So you touch it again, and it reads 125.. it will then take the 125 and base the calorie burn off that until you touch it again and so on down the line. Thats why you had such a crazy read.. because it was prob. stuck on a really high heart rate.

Chest straps on the other hand continuously feed the heart rate info to the watch.. so there is no stopping to touch, and have it being essentially "stuck" on one heart rate and basing that calorie count off just the heart rate it has at the time. Instead it will base the count off of all the heart rate data that it receives.

Bottom line, Chest Strap ones will always be more accurate.. and Polar is one of the best chest strap brands. For 60 dollars on Amazon, you can buy an FT4 and it will be significantly more accurate then the one you have now.

Thank you so much. I was wondering if I had to keep touching it or not. I did touch it ever so often during my workout just to check. I think I may take it back. Hope I can find my receipt. I bought it last weekend. I saw the Polar FT4 there. Thinking. Ay make the exchange.

I have the polar FT4 and i love it and would highly recommend it. I bought mine at Target, but it is probably way cheaper on Amazon.

Well if it is kickboxing, I (according to this and other sites) burned 117 calories from 10 minutes of kickboxing (I had a 10 minute solution DVD with a ten minute kickboxing workout) so I would say it is possible.
