I've lost 14 pounds so far and I've now hit a plateau. I went from 172 to 158. Several others from here said to switch up my exercise routine to kick things back into gear. I have a treadmill at home already that I use to walk/jog on. I also have a giant yoga ball along with 2, 5 and 8 pound hand weights. What other pieces of exercise equipment would be good for me to use at home? I don't have tons of money or lots of room. I was thinking of things such as a jump rope, maybe a kettle ball,, etc. Any suggestions on what might be good for me to try?

I use a step. I just do what ever I want. I have taken classes in the past and I remember some of the moves.....I like it because I can still watch a program on TV and not realize that I am exercising!!!! Look at a thrift store or yard sales......got mine for $2.00!!

Jump rope for sure. And I've seen quite a few people that hula-hoop :)

I was thinking a jump rope might be good too...and I've done the Wii for hula hoops! lol If that counts.

Look up some HIIT for your treadmill. Jump ropes are great, too. Kettlebell workouts do get results, but form is crucial. I have seen a lot of back and shoulder injuries associated with them. The Tough Mudder workout is awesome, too. www.toughmudder.com

If you can afford a kettlebell, get one. I'd go for one that's about 8kg-10kg to provide a challenge for later on. You can use your heavier dumbbells initially.

Have a look at a recent kettlebell thread for ideas. :)

In essence, with your home gear, you just need to make sure you're giving yourself a good workout. If you're thinking, "that was easy, now pass me the cake", you won't get the results you want. If you're thinking, "holy crap, I'm too old for this", you're probably on the right track.

Of course, go easy on yourself for the first few sessions (you know your own limits) to make sure you are doing things correctly. Do some research on form or perhaps seek the advice of a relevant professional before starting.
  • HIIT is High Intensity Interval Training - bring your heart rate up and go at a high pace for a minute then bring it down for 30 seconds then repeat.

I personally enjoyed my Insanity and Turbo Fire DVD at home they were really effective and came with schedules to follow - both have HIIT in them - Good luck!!

You can get a 40lb adjustable dumbbell set (CAP brand) for $30 at Walmart (or $40 for same set but diff. weights and a case). Cheaper than spending $$ buying individual dumbbells. Standard weight plates fit the bar so it's not too costly to buy more when you get up to 20lb on each.

lol...oh ok! :) My treadmill has an app I can do through my computer and it has exercise programs as well, I just have to set a number and it changes the speed, incline, etc.
