Cortisone shot effectiveness

Hi Friends, I just received my first cortisone shot in my knee. I'm a long time runner and also have a history of osteoarthritis. I haven't been running for a while due to OA flare-ups and am hoping the injection will give me some relief. Even if I can't run I hope to get back to my other activities with reduced pain...anyone have any experience with this and can give me some hopeful advice! Thanks!

I had shots in my cervical spine. The first shot alleviated my symptoms, but the second shot was like magic. I've been symptom free for a few years since.0

From what I learned in school a cortisone shot will most definitely get rid or drastically reduce pain.
BUT!!! the pain may be gone.... but that doesn't mean the problem that causes the pain is gone. The cortisone shot just effects the nerves in the area and dulls them to their perception of pain. So be careful please and just remember to keep yourself in check. Running may not be a good idea anymore but activities that have less impact on your knees is fine.
To end on a good note Enjoy being pain free above all else.0 -
I know someone who had several injections over a few years. Worked lovely for about a month but the pain/inflammation kicked back in. He had tendinitis at the time but after two years and consulting specialists he had to have surgery which sorted it out. Obviously that's a last resort and I think the surgery is only offered if the pain is so extreme and affects every day life.
The surgery so far has worked several months late, pain free and no more flare-ups. Not sure how different osteoarthritis is but the treatment sounds about the same.
Best of luck with your knee though, knee problems run in my family so I'll probably have similar problems as I get older.0 -
I hope it works for you but it did not work for me in my neck, and after a year of treatments I finally ended up with titanium rods that finally relieved the pain and abled me to turn my head - you know, like a normal person can do! Feel better soon.0

My gran had one in her shoulder about 4 or 5 years ago which helped her a lot. It's just started to wear off this past few months so I'm trying to convince her to go get another one.
I've had a series of them in my wrist too for an undiagnosed (and seemingly impossible to diagnose!) problem. First one helped with the pain a lot for about a month and I could do things with my wrist again with just very minor discomfort, a few months later I had a 2nd which helped for about a week or 2 and then a few months after that I had a 3rd which left me in agony and unable to move my arm for a week. When they work they're great but I'd still take it easy and not push yourself too much so you don't do any lasting damage.0 -
Thanks for the very helpful info and advice friends, I really appreciate it!!0

That **** is a god send. I've had to get it in my back two times before because of a bulge on a disc on my lumber spine.0
