I was never officially diagnosed with pcos, but was given metformin after a miscarriage in 2006, I now have a 4 year old and a 10 month old that were both conceived after losing about 10% of my weight each time and tedious tracking on fertilityfriend. I also used my temperature and an ovuscope to key into the fertility friend. Good luck to you all!
  • I'm not in that boat, luckily for me, but one of my motivators for losing weight and now keeping it down is my family history of pre-eclampsia and high blood pressure. My mother nearly died with the severe pre-eclampsia that she had having me - I was born 3 months prem weighing a whole 670 grams and am lucky to be alive. I believe my aunt also had problems with pre-eclampsia. I am an only child because of pre-eclampsia.

My mother's whole family has a very strong tendency towards obesity, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and diabetes, heart disease, early death from heart disease...none of these precisely help with pre-eclampsia risk.

So I'm probably over-aware of pregnancy risk factors, and eating well, exercising and keeping my weight down are the only things that I can really control to reduce my risk of pregnancy issues. We're probably going to start trying this year and I'm determined to keep my weight down and have healthy habits through pregnancy.

So not in the same boat, but also motivated by being as healthy as possible for a future pregnancy.

I really hope all of you who are struggling with fertility have your dreams come true!!!! I can't imagine how hard it must be emotionally and what you have to put your body through with fertility treatment sounds awful, so I really hope it works out for all of you!!

I was married for 7 years (still am technically, just separated). I tried almost the whole time to get pregnant, to no avail. My Rather than husband didn't seem to think it was a big deal that we weren't getting pregnant, but my biggest desire in life is to be a mother, so I was crushed. In January 2009, after having my period for 45 days straight, I visited my ob/gyn. He did not seem concerned about my fertility, or my prolonged period. He told me that I was fat and would not be able to conceive. He told me that the only way for me to lose wight was to have bariatric surgery. He then sent me for some tests. He did not tell me what these tests were for. I went and had a glucose tolerance test. He called me and told me (based on this one test) that I had diabetes, hypo-thyroidism, and PCOS. While I know I have ovarian cysts (have had since I started menstruating), my cysts have always been large. I had on removed a few years prior that was 18cm in diameter.

Bariatric surgery was not an option that I wanted to take. I don't believe that just because I'm fat that I can't conceive. I believe there are deeper issues here, but he was unwilling to even discuss my fertility due to my size. I went to my PCP, and he looked at my test results and said that I was only borderline diabetic and my thyroid was just a little slow. Both of which, he said, could be controlled by diet and exercise. I have read that PCOS cannot be diagnosed without an ultrasound, which he did not do. He was simply looking at the fact that I am slightly glucose resistant.

I was soooo angry to be treated this way simply because I am overweight. I have known several large women who have conceived and had healthy babies. I feel like he just wrote me off. Well, my husband and I aren't together anymore, but I do still want so badly to be a mother. I am going to lose the weight partly because I believe that it will help me to conceive (if we ever get back together, or if I remarry). But I'm going to do it MY way, not the way he wanted me to. And I will not allow myself to be bullied by the medical community again!

yes, we have been ttc for over 4 years now... a year and a half ago i found out i had 7 large cysts (turned into a tumor) on my right ovary. ovary couldnt be salvaged so the entire thing had to be removed. on the good side, it wasnt cancerous yet or anything like that. but to add to being overweight, i now only have 1 ovary.
my starting weight was 324 three months ago. so far ive lost 45 pounds in 2 months (im only weighing in once a month) and the next weigh in will be the 11th to see if ive lost anymore. ive got a LONG way to go but im willing to do anything i can to up my chances of conceiving!
glad to hear theres other women going thru the same thing and would love for anyone to add me and we can get thru this together!

did i mention it makes me aggravated that EVERYONE i went to school with is on their 2nd or 3rd child now? haha..
but it is a great thing to fuel my motivation and work that much harder to achieve my goal.

sending everyone lots of healthy baby dust!

I too saw a male OBGYN who said I was to fat to have a child. Well I guess he was wrong because I have a healthy 4 year old son. Only sad part is I have been trying to have another baby for over two years and to my suprise I found out a few months ago I had PCOS. The pills to make me have a period are working but the pills to make me ovulate have not been successful.
  • I am new here and am glad to see so many others that could support me in trying to lose weight for a baby. I was married for 5 1/2 years before we finally got pregnant (had been trying almost that whole time!) I got pregnant about a year after we stopped doing all fertility treatments. Just thought we'd take a break because it is stressful trying to get pregnant and it was taking it's toll on my marriage. During that year I was exercising and working at a physical labor job so I got in pretty good shape (for me), and felt pretty healthy. It was a huge surprise to find out I was pregnant since we weren't doing any kind of treatments. Just the old fashioned way! YAY! I had a great pregnancy and recovery, but I quit my job to stay home with my son, and got out of the habit of exercising and have now gained 80 pounds since my pre-pregnancy weight. My son is 2 1/2 now and we haven't been able to get pregnant, and I'm thinking that I only got pregnant last time because I was pretty healthy. I definitely don't feel healthy like last time.

I have always struggled with weight, but I really want another baby and sibling for my first miracle baby. I need all the help I can get. Please add me. I need encouragement and want to help encourage you!

I also have PCOS and was prescribed Metformin. We had tried getting pregnant for 2 years before I went to the Dr. to find out why it wasn't happening. I would only get my period once every 4 months and it would last 10-18 days each time. I was told with the Metformin it should aid in weight loss along with cause ovulation each month. I track my month cycle on an app called "My Day's". I love the app and it's been right on each month. Some times I am overly surprised at how accurate it is.

Please feel free to add me as a friend and we can fight this battle together.

I don't have any infertility problems (I have a just turned 2 year old son and a 9 month old daughter), but I just wanted you to know that I will be praying for you and all the other women who shared their struggles.
My husband and I are wanting more children at some point but I told him I didn't want more until I lost all the baby fat, hence the reason I'm on here :)
All the best in your weight loss and God bless!
  • I don't have PCOS, but I know my weight has been a hinder on my chance to conceive a child. I have been married almost 9 years and I have been with my husband for 14. He wants a baby and a child so much. It breaks my heart that I can't give him the biggest wish that he wants. I am doing this for my health but also for our future. I feel much better knowing I am not alone...Please add me I am looking for new friends and support during this difficult time. :)

    Hi!

I have a history of unexplained IF and 2 miscarriages (and also, thankfully, 2 kids!) ..
didn't join specifically for that reason but I'm hoping that while I'm getting into awesome shape it won't hurt and if anything will help me get (and stay..) pregnant!

    Good luck to you all!

    Hello,
I also have PCOS, and have had fertility issues because of it. I have never conceived, I am a mommy though, I adopted my son and I have my two step-kids. I am not loosing wait solely for Fertility, I want to be the healthiest I can be. I was diagnosed in 2001. and I tried many different fertility drugs and tricks to get pregnant. The best thing you can do is be the healthiest you that you can be.

I don't have any type of fertility issue but I would like to birth our next on The farm in Tennessee and for that to happen I need to be 150-190lbs so I'm trying to lose it and make that a possibility. Good luck to you. I hope this is what you need to make it work for you! =D
  • Sigh. Trying to see if my ticker works but doesn't. Then I found I can't delete the post. Sorry for this random post that has nothing to do with anything.
  • Ladies I'm pretty nervous about my doctor's appointment today. I really hope my FSH numbers are still good. They were pretty good last time I went but that was a year ago. I'm going to be 41 in March. I feel like my time is running out. Also my due date (the baby I lost) is looming. It is Superbowl Sunday. I really hoped that I would be pregnant again by then. I need some prayers/positive vibes if you have any to spare. Thanks!

  • Having a baby is a big part of the reason I'm here. My fiance and I are getting married in October and want to start trying for baby soon after. Problem is, I get my period only every 2-3 months or so now (mixed in with the occasional month + bleed-a-thon UGH), and I'm not ovulating. My Obgyn thinks it's the weight- all my hormone levels keep checking out (although I am going to get them rechecked this week and I'm very nervous). So, she wants me to try and lose weight and see if my periods regulate again. Hopefully. There are many other reasons that I'm here too, but I think the desire to have a baby and a have a healthy pregnancy will be the thing that finally makes me finish my weight loss journey.

Anyway, I'm new here too and looking for buddies if anyone wants to add me!

Erin, So sorry for your loss! The due date thing is hard :(
Mine would have been June and I'm even having a hard time now hearing other people announce that they're due then.
Sending lots of good wishes your way! Make sure to take care of yourself and take it easy during this tough time.

To everyone else.. wishing you all lots of luck with your weight loss and baby making/keeping!
  • I also am doing this to lose weight for fertility reasons. I have been heavy all my life and I have tried to lose before.Thisisthe most I have ever lost. I am more motivated than in hopes the weight loss will help me to be able to conceive the child I so desperately want. I wish you lots of luck and hope you find your happiness in the baby you want.

  • I am here for fertility reasons. I have been overweight my whole life and struggled with losing weight. My husband and I have been ttc since July 2010 and we have had two miscarriages in that time. I just met with a fertility specialist who told me to lose 40 lbs before moving forward with him. I want to be a mom so badly and hopefully that goal will help motivate me. Good Luck!

I am in the same boat... I've been reading a lot and found some interesting info. We have been TTC for 8 months with no luck so I am switching to an all-natural diet and eliminating alcohol and caffiene except for green tea. I'm not overweight, but I'm pushing the healthy weight limits for my body. I think I am at about 30% body fat and my trainer told me 25% would be ideal. Its so frustrating because my friend got pregnant on the first try and she is obese. I know I need to be happy for her but there is a little jealous part of me.

The things I have read to do to increase fertility are to have:

    - At least one serving of whole dairy a day. It must be full fat, low fat and fat free actually reduce fertility by 27%
    - Drink green tea, it has shown to double fertility in women when consumed daily
    - Take prenatal vitamins
    - Increase exercise. I just started doing 5 hours per week of yoga or pilates to increase blood flow.

    And what not to do:

    - No alcohol... 1-5 drinks per week reduces fertility by 20% and 5+ drinks per week reduces fertility by 50%
    - No caffiene, 200mg + reduces fertility by 50%
-Don't use lubrication, it kills sperm. Even fertility friendy lubricants and saliva can harm sperm.
-No artificial sweeteners like aspartame or splenda

Anyways, I am by no means a doctor, this is what I have collected online from just perusing different websites, but it all pretty much makes sense. They are all general health guidelines which I probably should be doing anyways : ) Good luck to you, I know how frustrating it can be. I had my iud removed 8 months ago and was positive I would be preggers by now. I just finished grad school last week so now I want to do everything in my power to try and make this work : ) If you find anything good please let me know!

Hello! I too have PCOS and have had a very difficult time conceiving. My husband and I have been together for 5 years now and still haven't had a baby. My obgyn has told me most likely the only way I will be able to do this without all the drugs is to lose 100 pounds, so here I am. It's not going to be an easy journey and I'll fall off the wagon here and there but I really want to be healthy enough to have a child!

No PCOS here, but I joined MFP last July in order to get to a healthy weight prior to TTC. I'm currently pregnant and I'm not sure if that would have happened without losing the weight. Now I am doing my best to keep up those healthy habits during this pregnancy.

Prayers for everyone here who is trying to get healthier to start a family!

Having a kid was one of the reasons my wife and I decided to lose weight, not only the conceiving part but being around to watch them grow up and have energy for the kid. We are expecting our first in September 7th.

One of the biggest factors for me losing weight is so that my husband and I can try again at starting a family. We've been together for 10 years and have only managed to get pregnant once after I lost 40 lbs on WW. I went in to labor early and she was born still born 4 years ago. We decided 2 years ago to start trying again but with no luck. I'm not ready to go see a fertility specialist yet or at least until I have tried losing weight again to see if that helps. Anyone who would like to add me, please feel free to do so. Good luck to all of you.

P.S. being healthy again does factor in as well.

I don't have any fertility issues that I know of. I don't have PCOS at least, I do know that. I am finally resolved to do this because I want kids really bad, but I will not, & downright refuse to try to get pregnant with this weight on. I know how dangerous it is, and I don't want to ask for any issues. Pregnancies can come with their own problems without my body and fat causing them.

Frankly, I know I'm probably an oddball here, but I love my birth control and am not ready to be off it yet. My skin has never been clearer, my hair is shinier, my periods are not near as heavy or as painful. Sucks trying to remember it everyday and can't wait for that to be over.

But yes, I am definitely on this journey with children in mind. It is my main goal. I'm tired of waiting, and my husband is 6 years older than me, and he doesn't deserve to wait any longer. He will be an awesome daddy. Although he will be an instigator and I will probably be having to put him on a time out as well. LOL!
