if your going to build up to a run then I would say treadmill if not just hit your local mall (when its cold/ raining) or park to take walks --
  • I have an elliptical machine that is sitting and collecting dust, but I use my treadmill every day. I have lost 72 lbs on it, just by walking. However I will note that my Elliptical Machine is not a powered one and that is probably why I don't like it.

I also like having a treadmill at home, I don't have an excuse to not use it other than pure laziness. If I had to go somewhere else everyday, I probably wouldn't.

I have been using the arctrainer three times a week and love it. It's supposed to burn double the calories of an elliptical (I think) and is even better on your knees... be prepared to SWEAT, though!

    Good luck!

My husband's fitness magazine rated all the cardio machine. The treadmill was the lowest as it isn't even as good as walking outside. At least walking on the street you have to propel your body instead of just lifting your feet up on a treadmill. The best was the elliptical it even beat out the stairmaster.
The bike was kind of in the middle.

I've tried all three and the eliptical is the the best for me to burn cals on. I burn x2 the amt on it then on the bike, for the same amt of time. I do okay on a treadmil but its still not as many (and i have a fear of flying off the thing lol!)

I'd say an Arc Trainer is by far the best workout for cardio/fat loss but the elliptical is available more often.
  • Elliptical is my favorite

I don't know if it's working exactly, but hubby & I love the recumbent bike.
We never used the treadmill because it was so loud & too big & heavy to move to a better place in the house.
    We like to walk outside.
But we bought the bike last February & I could only do 5 minutes before absolutely collapsing!
Now I have worked up to more than an hour at almost the highest level. I regularly burn 100 calories in 5 minutes. It's comfortable to ride & lighter, so I can watch TV with the fan pointing at me.
I know that the calories burned is not absolutely accurate, but that's okay with me. Comparatively, I've come a long way. :blushing:

I say go with what you will do the most. I have had all three and once I made my mind up to exercise, I used the machine daily.

I have elliptical and love it. On any of the machines, try to get the best you can afford. Check to see if you have a Play It Again Sports in your area.

Ppl who bought machines they never use, consign them and they are 1/2 price. I even found my Ellip brand new from a store closeout there.

Try them out for a while at the store before purchasing. Oh and wear your HRM so you can log the calories burned:laugh:

It's true - whatever you like works best.
I found that I can go longer on the treadmill, but I burn more calories per minute on the bike. I get a better all body work out on the treadmill though - my arms don't do much when I bike.

Ooh yeah, and you can add hand weights and over head movements to make it even harder.......get the HR up. I get the weird smiles at the gym when I do BOOM BOOM POW in the air while working out:laugh:
