I know it has no nutritional value, but how is it harmful? I drink very little of it but I've heard it's bad for you. I'm seriously ignorant about this topic, help a sister out will ya?

Alarmist posts aside, consuming diet pop occationally is fine especially if it helps you meet your goals.0

I'm sure some "expert" will help you out here.
Seriously, unless you're drinking this INSTEAD of water, or you need something "sweet" all day long, I wouldn't worry.0 -
There are no bad foods when consumed in moderation. Every week some pundit will declare ingredient x or y toxic and everyone runs around thinking the sky is falling.
If you were consuming large quantities the sodium may be an issue.0 -
Calorie wise, it's a non-issue. It is an issue if you have health problems related to your sodium intake since there is a lot of that in sodas in general. Also, there are lots of other chemicals & artificial sweeteners that probably not that good for you either, in large quantities.
I personally think it's fine in moderation, like all foods.0 -
ok, thanks everybody. I'm only having a few glasses a week, guess I don't have to worry about it:drinker:0

I never really liked diet sodas that much. What I do use is MIO, and just put it in my water. I drink it all day long. Does anyone else use this product, or maybe some type of Crystal Light type of drink?0

In the last week, I've cut a 27 year 3 diet coke a day habit down to 1 and I'll be off it by the weekend. I can tell you this.. by cutting down my sleep apnea has improved and I'm a heck of a lot less hungry now. Not sure why, dont care... I'll see what the scale says on saturday.0

The only thing I remember reading recently is that the artificial sweetener in diet soda is so much sweeter than regular sweetener that it changes a persons perception of sweetness and that it makes them crave sweeter foods more. Personally, I try never to "drink" my calories and sometimes a diet soda is just what I feel like having.0

The artificial sugar in diet soda makes your brain anticipate something sweet. When your body doesn't get the actual sugar molecule that it is expecting, it begins to crave it. Drinking diet soda may cause you to crave, and consume, more sweets than you normally would. It probably won't kill you that you're enjoying the occasional soda, but what is the point of consuming all of those chemicals?0

I don't think you really have to worry about it unless you're trying to fix your insulin resistance. But as a part of the average diet, I would much rather drink the version with no calories than the version with sugar any day.0

I read this article a few days ago, I think it discusses the sugar/artificial sweetener argument rather nicely.

Diet soda has chemicals in it that trick your brain into thinking sugar is coming. When it doesn't, you start to crave sugar. It does a whole lot of other things to your body, but if losing weight is your only concern, that alone should dissuade you from drinking it. People who drink diet soda actually gain weight.0

That's a great article!
Artifical sweeteners are very harmful, worse for you health-wise than actual sugar (and I mean raw sugar, not bleached, processed, white sugar). Aspertame is a common sweetener for diet sodas, and it's been linked to dementia, cancer, and a whole slew of other serious ailments. I know - I'm the one declaring an ingredient toxic! But aspertame has raised flags for a long time, it's not the evil ingredient of the week, and the value of aritificial sweeteners have long been called into question by doctors.
And @niftyafterfifty is also correct about it causing you to drink more in the end, and thereby gain more. Try natural coconut water, it's packed with electrolytes that give you the same energy boost as drinks like gatorade, minus the poison.0 -

Our bodies don't need the chemicals that are in it, so why drink it? Nobody has proven that diet soda is bad, but the fact is, it isn't nutritious either. You would do better fueling your body with water or tea (or milk or anything, really, that isn't processed).
It's all a matter of personal choice. I used to drink one or two Diet Cokes every single day. Over time I slowly stopped drinking it, and when I tried it after a while it made me feel kind of nauseous so now I don't get it ever. Plus the artificial sweetness may perpetuate your sweet tooth and cause you to make bad choices when you go to get a snack.
That's basically it... you won't die if you drink it occasionally! But I don't see a reason to drink it any more, so I don't.0 -
Nobody mentions the damage it does to your teeth? It doesn't contain any sugar, but it's pure acid and breaks down the glazing of your teeth.0
-
I like it , but in my case , it makes me hold fluid. But, that's me. I drink iced tea and I love it.0
