How many calories does lifting weights burn?

I don't know much about how many calories lifting weights burns. I know that you get more calorie burn after you lift weights during the day, but I am just curious what the average burn is for those of you who use a HRM. I am currently doing Chalene Johnson's Chalean Extreme, so I am lifting around 35-45 minutes of 8-12 reps the heaviest I can do. I also know that caloric burn is individual, but I was just wondering because mfp says i burn around 121 calories for 35 minutes. Just wondering if that's average or not.

i'm 5'5 205 pounds. i do new rules of lifting for women and according to my HRM, when i lift i average anywhere from 350-500 calories for a 30-40 minute session. i'm also doing 3 sets of 8 of a weight that's kinda close to my max.0

Anyone else?? I'm really curious.0

I'm curious too. I've hired a personal trainer and he is killing me for sixty minutes of the heaviest weights I can handle.0

Does anyone else know?0

I change routine every month with my trainer. At the start of the month, I can burn up to 350 calories but after 4 weeks I barely burn 200 lifting heavier . By the way HRM are not very accurate to know the calories burn when doing strength.0

i have researched this because i wanted to know myself.... light moderate general weightlifting. (for instance i do a dumbbell regimen) is 5.2 calories per minute, so 156 calories in a half hour. If you do power lifting it will be more. i just created an exercise in my cardio section in a half hour increment. this was if I do more then i can just continue to add. Hope this helps.0

There's really no way to know because everyone is different. HRMs aren't accurate in determining calories burned during weight lifting for a number of reasons (I'd recommend doing research but basically they calculate heart rate but when you lift, even if its quick, it confuses HR with the pressure caused by blood volume being displaced during lifting. Or something along those lines)

I am about 199lbs, and I burn about 350-500 in 60-80 minutes doing 5x5s and 5x10s of heavy weights.
As with all exercises, it is relative to your size and weight0 -
Firstly hrm do not work at all for lifting. Your heart rate has zero bearing on calorie burn for non cardio exercise..
Secondly, the more you lift, the more calories you burn. Anyone at the high intermediate strength level or higher will get some very decent burns from lifting. Ask guys trying to put weight on who are strong, it's not easy..0
