BEAN QUESTION. Bush's Best?!

So I eat beans. A lot of beans. Like, I seriously probably go through a can of beans once a day. My question is primarily concerning Bush’s Best Pinto Beans.

I’m confused as to why, for the same serving size (approx. 127-130g) BB says 80 calories per serving, but every other brand I’ve ever seen, says 120ish. I recently switched to eating the higher calorie ones just in case but I’m curious as to why such a big discrepency?

Also, BB is the only brand of pinto beans I’ve eaten that explode in the microwave. Not all of them, but many and I hav to put a plate on top of the bowl to keep them from making the microwave a mess. Other brands don’t do this at all.

Anyone have any insight?

As for the calories, I use Whole Foods 365 brand no salt added pintos and the ingredients are only beans and water and they are 110 for the same serving size. I would say maybe it is drained vs. undrained but the liquid is water. Very odd.

Are there preservatives in the beans? I wonder if different food additives are more likely to explode.

Two very strange issues, sorry I have no answers!

Hmmm... I'm wondering if some of the others add sugar, while Bush's indicates "0" on their nutrition label. I generally buy "the store brand" and will pay closer attention the next time I go shopping.

OK...you made me too curious to contain myself. I couldn't resist Google  I looked up Bush's and Eden Pinto Beans and noticed that Eden lists Total Fat at 1g while Bush's indicates 0. Also Eden indicates <1g of sugar while Bush's indicates 0.

Very small sample, I know, but hopefully helpful!
  • Thanks guys! I really don't know what to think. I mean I've noticed discrepancies between things like sugars, and random other nutrition values but never anything substantial.

The beans are also a lot bigger in the Bush's Best in comparison to the one I now eat which is Essential Everyday's brand. I stick to EE because it's better safe than sorry when it comes to calories but it's like... a bean is a bean, right?

Haha I'd assume that if I drained the beans and rinsed them and everything, 127g of one should be the same as the other.

    Any other thoughts, MFP?
