Weighing in question

I was going to wait until tomorrow, which is my 1 week mark since starting my new lifestyle, but I broke down a minute ago and stepped on the scales. I know these scales are accurate because my husband and I both had appts. with our doctor this week and weighed when we got home and it matched perfectly. Also my mother knows her exact weight and tested them.

Anyway- I weighed in a 230 at the beginning of the week, 229 3 days ago and 228 last night.
This morning I weighed in at 225.

My question, do we weigh less first thing in the morning? There's no way I lose 5 pounds in 6 days.

yes you do weigh less in the morning, everyone's weight fluctuates throughout the day by about 2 pounds, for consistency you should only weigh once a week and at the same time of the day:) congrats on your weight loss:)

Yes mostly because of water weight. I always weigh in the morning.
This morning I weighed myself and it said 158 then I had 3 coffees and two glasses of water and weighed again for curiosity and it said 160. lol
your weight will fluctuate throughout the day thats why I always weigh once a week first thing in the morning.

Generally you do weigh less in the morning. Also though, your first week of a dramatic lifestyle change can result in a bigger loss. Usually its water weight thats lost and not all fat. I know if I eat bad for a week and "gain" 3lbs, after a day or two of drinking tons of water that weight is gone.

I am consistent on the time of day I weigh in (first thing in the morning). But I've checked at later times in the day and I have also seen up to 3 pounds variation between evening weight and morning weight. I attribute most of it to water and a small portion to actual fat loss. I think losing 5 pounds in 6 days is something to be cheered! Congrats!!

Weight fluctuates all the time. Best thing is to pick one day of the week to weigh in. Weigh first thing in the morning after going to the bathroom.

Some people weigh every day. That would make me crazy with all the fluctuation. I hop on the scale first thing Sunday morning.

Yes, actually it is recommended to weigh-in first thing in the morning after using the restroom because that way you are weighing your actual body weight by itself. If you weigh say, in the afternoon, there is a possibility your scale could be taking into account any food or water(especially if you drink A LOT like me :P ) into your weight. I would go with the weight from when you checked first thing in the morning, that's the more accurate number, seeing that you haven't drank or ate and are "empty".

I weigh less first thing in the morning than at the end of the day...mainly because I don't have a couple of pounds worth of food and drink in me...
I can weigh up to 3lbs less from just before I go to bed and when I get up first thing

Also I only accept the weight I weigh in on a Sunday morning. Even if the Saturday is lower, I only log and use the Sunday one.

You could easily lose 5 pounds of water weight in 6 days.

And yes, we weigh less in the morning. I weigh after I wake up and have my morning bathroom ritual, before breakfast, still in my pajamas. Everything we eat, drink, wear reflects on the scale, so first thing in the morning before we take anything in is our most accurate weight.

A lot of people weigh naked, but I don't because I don't weigh naked when I go to the doctor's office. I also don't wear my pajamas to the doctor's office, but they are what I normally weigh in at home, so I'm satisfied that it's a pretty accurate reflection when I step on the scale.
  • Thank you all so much for the quick answers!!
This has been a VERY radical change for me. I literally woke up Sunday and changed everything. I was a junkfood eater, soda drinker, soda and coffee was all I drank all day. I ate horribly, ZERO exercise. Now I watch everything I eat, I quit soda *except for a couple slips :)* and switch to one cup of coffee with cream and sugar (half the usual amount) and 2 cups black.

I filled my fridge with fresh fruits and veggies and replaced meats with turkey and tilapia. Im actually have a hard time meeting my calories.
(I'm also a gluten free gal)

We always weigh less in the morning. I generally weigh anywhere from two to three lbs more at night. By the way, it's a good idea to only weigh once a week and then in the morning after you've been to the bath room. In fact, some folks think less is better. Others will tell you daily. I guess it's a personal call. Trouble is, if you weigh daily, you weight fluctuates too much to be realistic.

I think it's important to simply way under the same conditions each time. Same time of day, same amount of clothing (or lack of), etc.

On a side note, I've heard that we weigh the least one hour after waking in the morning.
  • Thank you!! This reply made me smile :)

  • Im going to go with weekly weigh ins. This first week I've been over excitable I think.

What is important is to be consistent. Do the same thing each time you weigh and you'll get reasonable comparisons. Beyond that, some of the recommendations of others here I have also found to be important:
    - weigh in the morning
    — after using the restroom
    —— naked

Also, make sure your scale is level! If the floor is uneven, it will mess up the results. That means also putting the scale in the same place each time.

I weigh my self three times in succession because sometimes I get different readings. If I get two weight numbers that agree, that's what I record.

    Good luck!
