Problem with protein shakes

Hello. Tried my first protein shake today. Chocolate flavour with 1% fat milk. Tasted fine.

Then about 60 minutes later I felt sick as a dog and vomited. I ate some toast but vomited it all up. All I could taste was the shake.

I drink milk fine so I am not lactose intolerant. I am frightened to try it again in case I have the same reaction.

I googled and found a few people have had the same reaction. Not long before i was sick I had a multivitamin tablet. Do you think the combination upset me? If I do try some again I think I will just use water.

Anyone else had similar problems?

Do you usually take your multivitamin on a full stomach?

I know unless I eat a good amount before I take mine I feel horrible. Once I just ate a yogurt and then my multivitamin and I was so nauseous until I ate something again.

Hello. It was the first time in about a month I have taken a multivitamin. I took them any time of the day normally and all was fine.

Hey at least you lost some calories....................kidding.

Some shakes don't sit right with people. Maybe try again and if you get the same result, maybe try a different brand?

I would read the ingredient label and look for any of the 'fake sugars' Sucralose, aspartamine etc. some of those 'chemical sugars' don't sit well with people.

I know if I drink any kind of diet beverage with those in there, I will get the worst stomach cramps, and get bloated.

I use an unflavored whey protein isolate powder and mix it into soy milk so I know I can handle it. (Whey protein isolate is virtually lactose free too)

I use Nu-Tek's Vanilla, love it, I can add it to anything, or use with plain water. I feel sick if I do a hard workout and dont do a shake a bit before. Mabey try different protein brands and types. There are soy, rice, and pea proteins too. The rice and pea together make a complete protein like beans n rice :)

I used to have some protein, can't remember the brand, that would make me feel ill if I drank it on an empty stomach. Switched to Optimum Nutrition whey and haven't had the same problem. It could also have been the vitamin if you took that on an empty stomach.
  • It's very likely you are alergic to it. Stop taking it.

Is this protein supplement with added vitamins? Or just plain whey protein? If it has added vitamins/minerals and you drank it and then had a multivitamin your body might have been on overload.

I also use Optimum Nutrition (100% natural oats and whey...vanilla bean and chocolate) and don't have an issue.

Thanks for the replies. It's the ON 100%whey. Had it today with water and a banana blended in. It stayed down! Hurrah.

I drank it slowly this time too. I will try again tomorrow but it seems it may have been the multivitamin I had a whole after the shake yesterday that my tummy didn't like.

Do you normally take a multi-vitamin? I cannot take them, they make me vomit. It doesn't matter whether it's on a full or empty stomach. Have you tried any of the gummy multi-vitamins? My daughter has the same issue, but she can take the gummies and she is okay.

I too have had problems with shakes. They made me so ill I've stopped using them alltogether. Now I have to rely on a good diet. I'm starting to wonder whether its the vitamines they contain are the route cause. Recently I've had probs with multivitamines too. I wonder whether pure protien with no additives is the way forward.

My symtoms are extreme nausia with dizzyness and I've nearly colapsed too. But they don't happen instantly. Last time round it took a week untill I had any side effects. Really scared me. Docs say I'm physically fine. Anybody had the same??

I am fine with them now. Must have been a one off for me luckily. Love the double chocolate with almond or hazelnut milk.
