Music - What Was Your First...

In an effort to distract myself (I can't sleep) but also in the hopes that this will remind me of music I love but forgot about (and thus fill the remaining memory on my iPod), I would love to know your first:
- Song download:
- CD:
- Tape:
- Vinyl:
- 8Track:
- Concert (thanks for the idea juliecat1):

If you are in your 30s like me, you've probably been exposed to all of them (ok, maybe not the 8Track...we had an old one at home), and remember the years before the iPod: The walkman, the walkman with auto-reverse (the joy of no longer having to go manually from side A to side B), the disc-man (which let's face it, ALWAYS skipped unless you stood still) and constantly having to find that sweet spot with your index finger and using your acute sense of hearing to be able to listen to an FM radio station without background static noise.... ah, the memories!

OK, so here are mine (the first I purchased):
- Song download: Dave Matthews Band (just can't remember which song was the first)
- CD: Pearl Jam - Ten
- Tape: The Box - Closer Together
- Vinyl: n/a
- 8Track: n/a
- Concert: Sting

Dang. I listened to the COOLEST music when I was younger..

    Wow....LOVE this.

I grew up in a strict house. Could only listen to music "approved" by mom and dad (I grew up listening to the Carpenters and Randy Travis)

One day I was listening to The Divinyls singing "I Touch Myself"...and started singing along, at the top of my lungs "WHEN I THINK ABOUT YOU, I TOUCH MYSELF..." when my mom barged in and wanted to know what I was singing and WHY I was singing it. I didn't know, I was only 9 or 10 at the time...and had NO IDEA what that meant...HAHAHAHA....

I don't think I ever bought an 8-track, but remember having them around the house...gospel music. Southern gospel music. Think Inspirations, the Cathedrals...

Vinyl: I didn't buy them, but often took them from my mom's collection. Carpenters. Randy Travis. Eagles. LOOOOOOVE the Carpenters, always have, always will. Karen's voice....angelic. I heard she never had to do a retake on recording. Such a loss. I'm now gonna have to load up Pandora now to listen to her.

Tape: Probably, again, Randy Travis, but I had some good o' New Kids on the Block..."You Got the Right Stuff....baby.....love the way you turn me on......(the right stuff)" :-)

CD??? USHER. That's the first one I remember buying, actually. Still love me some Usher.

Download: Dave Matthews Band. "Ants Marching"

Concert: The FIRST one I ever remember going to was Ronnie Milsaps. Don't laugh. Remember. I grew up in an.....interesting household.
  • As a massage therapist, music is so important in my work and my life, so I loved talking about it!!!

    - Song download: Hmm, this one is hard, as I've been very bad when it comes to downloading music, I'm going to have to say...Ruckus (anyone remember that????) with Brady Paisley Mud on the Tires
    - CD: Anastasia/Barenaked Ladies (birthday present, got the boom box to go with it)
    - Tape: this one is hard because I grew up with tapes, so by the time I was born my family already had loads of them, I want to say Fred Penner
    - Vinyl: I never bought one but used my mom's, I had a Fisher Price phonograph that played Beauty and the Beast!
    - 8Track: Never really used one
    - Concert (thanks for the idea juliecat1): don't laugh-free tickets to Britney Spears and 98 degrees

    That's hilarious!
All of my family comes from Quebec and many of them don't really understand English that well or even not at all (we're all French speaking). Anyways... I'll always remember about 15 years ago when I came into my aunt's house and there she was with my two young cousins (about 6 or 7years old) singing George Michael's "I want your sex" at the top of their lungs. They just liked the melody, but none of them had any clue what they were singing. It was priceless...

Smiling, not laughing, I promise! :) I never really had a "boy band" phase, but about 8-9 years ago, Depeche Mode came to Montreal and my sister and I just had to go! Now that brought me back....
