Success is finding out how strong you are

This is a few weeks old now, but at least I'm finally getting round to posting it!

My success story is that....I made it to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro (19,341 feet). It's a success because I had no idea how strong I was either physically, emotionally or mentally.

If I can do that, I can do anything....

ps - sadly no MFP up there so I couldn't log the trek :o(

I know how exhausting that trek is, but only got to about 17,000 ft before the altitude problems (couldn't eat due to nausea at high camp) took me down. I have done enough mountaineering in the states and pushed my body beyond it's limits before but never anything like Kili. The combination of high altitude and long days on the mountain (did the Mechame route in 7 days) really wear on you. I did love how easy it was to breath at sea level after spending time at altitude adapting to the thin air. Sadly I'll have to go back and burn all those calories again to get the summit!

    Congratulations!

Now, what's the next mountain for you?

Thank you! I suffered from altitude sickness too - the nausea was horrific. On my final night (summit attempt) I was vomiting and hypothermic - not good. Yes, it is amazing how much better you feel breathing as you descend. I did the Lemosho route (8 days). It was the hardest thing I have ever done, but it is an amazing experience and I remain in absolute awe of the porters!

Not sure what's next... I'm a water baby normally and dive to depth so this really was totally out of my comfort zone. But knowing me, there will be something coming next... :o)

Thank you! It took 8 days in total (6.5 up and 1.5 down). Totally amazing experience but definitely one of the hardest things I've ever done. The final night ascent was the worst night of my life. Left camp around midnight to attempt the summit (which we reached just after sunrise) - my three least favourite things in the world are dark, cold and wind and we had all three!!!

Raised just over £7000 for HIV orphans and vulnerable children in Kenya and Tanzania thought, so all good :o)
